What are my chances? What should I send? Does being an athlete really help?
Your stats are great. Did you ask the coach? Some schools like Ivys have a formal process by which athletes are recruited and offered likely letters.
Not sure if JHU has the same. Coach would be the best person to ask.
Yeah. I’ve talked to the coach. I’ve also already been on an official recruiting trip, where I stay with a swimmer and go to classes. Since JHU is D3, they don’t have letters. They said that my name will be on a list and that when admissions gets my application they will pay special attention. Does that get me any advantage?
I agree, your stats are competitive even without the “athlete factor,” which can be significant in and of itself. Technically your ACT score is a higher percentile score (a 33 in math is better than a 720 percentile-wise) if you’re deciding between sending just one or the other.
Without taking the fact that you’re an athlete, your stats are highly competitive. My guess is that you’d get in even if you were not a recruited athlete.
I’d be willing to bet you are a admitted. No. Doubt. In. My. Mind.
D3 schools can be a crapshoot. The NESCAC schools use a system of tips and slots that the coaches dole out. The coaches sometimes are reluctant to give out tips or slots to high stat kids. The reason is that if they think a high stat kid can get in on his/her own then they will save their slot for a lower stat kid that really needs it.
Call the coach and ask directly what type of support you are being given. Ask if it’s a tip, slot or just a ‘nice to have’. Ask how many students in the past he’s gotten in past years with similar level of support.
JHU is so darn competitive that you don’t want to assessed in the general applicant pool. Although your stats are good it’s by no means a guarantee.
I know that my stats are good but not anything super special. However, regarding recruiting, I am the fastest breaststroke recruit. There are literally no other recruits faster than me in breaststroke and they are graduating a lot of seniors. Does that clear it up? The coach has told me that I am a very valuable asset. My hosts on my visit had like 3.8 gpa and 2080 sat scores, though they applied early. However, I heard that early decision is way more forgiving there? I know I’m asking a lot of questions. Thanks for the replies
Go read the stories on the athletic recruits subforum here. You’ll see many stories of students left out in the cold by coaches. The only real guarantee is a likely letter, which JHU does not offer.
The only person who can give you an idea of your chances is the coach.
You’ll get in, no problem.
@vrhou98 I’m also a swimmer. I’m not being recruited or anything. But how fast are your breaststroke times? Just curious.
Hey dude. These are my times.

Hello Vincent.
Who is this? How do you know me? Also please don’t use my name in a public setting
Did you end up applying ED? It would be a lot easier for you then
Might I recommend in the future you shave or add a few seconds from your racing times when you post on a forum? In the sporting world that is as good as a DNA sample.
True, but I wanted to be accurate as possible. I’m not too concerned with the recognition, because anyone I know that is on this website probably won’t use my name like that.
Regarding early decision, I didn’t apply. I don’t want to be bound to a school just yet.
Hm well would you say Hopkins is your top choice? This interest matters for them with RD athletes
