D is a prepharmacy major and the curriculum requires Calc 2311 and the first Chemistry requirement is CHM 2045. Both courses have prerequisites and readiness tests, but assuming a student doesn't pass either, the prerequisites are confusing. The placement part of the catalog says the prerequisite for MAC 2311 assuming you don't pass the CRA is MAC 1140 AND MAC 1114. However under course descriptions, the prerequisites say MAC 1140 OR 1147.

For Chemistry 2045, the placement page says CHM 1025 and MAC 1140 OR 1147. The course descriptions say MAC 1147 or equivalent.

Does anyone have any knowledge of these requirements? Also, the prepharmacy advisor said that CLEP credit for MAC 1140 would be of no help in meeting these prerequisites.

The big question is would taking MAC 1140 be ample for both classes or would you need MAC 1147?

In high school she took all Honors Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus and is currently in AP Calc AB. If she passes AP Calc exam, that'll take care of everything but we won't know that until July, so we're just trying to plan ahead.

She was accepted for Spring and if they don't grant the change of term to Summer, will start at Santa Fe in Fall. They don't even offer MAC 1147.

ASMAJ it looks like you have a good handle on the pre-health curriculum. Thanks.

Even if she doesn't pass the AP exam, she should start with MAC2311 or MAC2312(if she wants too). Forget about the 1140/1147, its for people lacking in a math background. The readiness should be an easy pass.

Thanks, ASMAJ. It seems like everyone we've asked at UF say the prereqs are rigid, but I get a different feeling from threads I've read here. Hopefully she passes the CRA and better yet, AP Calc. We'll see. She has a B in there, but hasn't done well on any AP exams yet.

The prereqs are definitely not rigid. There are always a way to override, but 90% of the time that's not necessary. One thing I will warn you about is that preview advisors and preview staffers love to talk students out of taking classes. At this stage in someones education, you should have an idea of what you can handle and what your background in a subject is.

The one think you have to get use to before college is that a class might be based on 2-5 exams. That was an adjustment for me, since most of the exams in HS cover 1/2 (maybe 3) chapters, then in college I had to take 3-10 chapters exams.
