I'm going to be a freshman for fall quarter and because I received a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam, my Academic History on Tritonlink shows that I've fulfilled Chem 6A, 6B, and 6C. But my question is - do I still have to take the 6B Lab course? It's shown as incomplete on the Degree Audit, but I'm not sure - it doesn't seem to make sense that I would take a lab course that's supposed to go with a class I've already "completed". Input is much appreciated! Thanks. :]]

im caught in the same predicament as well x_sforzando, but im fairly sure we’re still supposed to take chem 6bl. generally they encourage taking it with chem6c because some students may be thinking of pairing it with the prior levels (6a/b). im not sure why but i think its probably because the chem 6bl class requires some prior knowledge learned from chem 6a/b. hopefully someone can explain that as thats my logical explanation. but im probably going to be taking the honors series of general chem so ill be taking chem 6bl with chem 6ch. i hope this helps a bit. :)

yes, u still need to take chem 6 bl :] it’s a separate course.
in order to take chem 6 bl u need to have already taken chem 6a and chem 6b, which ur already exempt from as a result of ur AP scores.

if you did a considerable amount of labs in AP chem and have an organized and well-kept notebook to record your efforts, you can try to petition out of chem 6BL. basically show them the notebook and demonstrate that you’ve learned everything and there’s no point in you taking chem 6BL again.

it was much easier to get the petition through in previous years (as in all the people i knew who attempted it got their petition approved), but lately they’ve started to crack down and discourage people from doing it. i didn’t know i could petition out of it until it was too late (like, a week before my 6BL final) but it would have been a good idea – i wouldn’t have had to spend 60 hours rotting in a lab, learning nothing except how to “reword” old lab reports. and my classmates probably would have appreciated my absence from the class as well, since people who already know the material only serve to screw up the curve for everyone else.

@astrina: My AP Chem teacher has my notebook stored away, and in my opinion, we did considerable lab work. I’m kinda lost on this, so how does that work? Would I submit a normal petition form, or do I just walk in and ask to petition out & show my notebook to the appropriate department? Thanks! :]

Oh, nevermind. I just read another thread on it, so I get it now. I’ll just have to get my stuff back from my teacher soon. Thanks! :]

They won’t give it to you unless you’ve spent the same amount of time in your high school lab as in 6BL.

6BL is I think 54 hours per quarter, so if you haven’t done 54 hours of lab work, they won’t give it to you. Same goes for college credit.

you could always just lie about the hours … i know my AP chem teacher would’ve been happy to back me up if i had chosen to do so. also, hours don’t always translate equally. one year of college calculus still coves more than the most ambitious AP calc class. and there’s always credit by examination.
