I transferred schools in between my sophomore and junior years, and my transcripts from both schools will be sent to all my colleges. My previous school didn't provide class rank, though, so I tried looking at its profile recently to get a sense of where I stood. Unfortunately, they only report GPA distributions for the 6th semester, and because I left after the 4th semester, the distributions aren't an accurate reflection since many people at my old school take more AP's junior year, thereby boosting their GPA's. How would colleges interpret this? Would they try to figure out where I stood at my previous school at all, or would they use the rank provided by my current school? Thanks.

Bump… something tells me they’ll just use the rank from my current school, but I need somebody else’s opinion.

Does anybody know?

No one? Really? :(

I’m sorry, I don’t know. Most likely they will look at your current GPA, since I know of someone who was in the same situation as you (transferred to another school senior year) and his rank was really low because the students at his new school all had their cumulative GPA counted in their rank (from 9-12th grade) but he only had his 12th grade GPA and this hindered his chances of admissions to his top school.

I’m not in any way trying to scare you or anything, because I don’t know for sure. But if you feel you’ve been wronged in the ranking process, you can have your counselor attach a note to in the secondary school report explaining your situation, or just explain it to them yourself by using the Common App’s extra information section. I’m sure colleges will understand, but they have to know about it first.
