I have a question about college essays. My daughter is a junior this year and will start applying to colleges in the Fall. I thought I would try to give her a little bit of a head's up and start looking at the colleges that she wants to apply to and what the essay topics are for those colleges. A few of the college websites that I have looked at seem to have the admissions requirements still up from the 2011-2012 admissions process. The question I have is, will the topics for the essays be the same for the 2012-2013 admissions process as they are for this year, or is it something that changes year to year? This is my first experience w/the whole college admissions process, and I am learning as I go along. I thought if the topics of the essays are going to remain the same, I could compile a list for my daughter so that she can start working on them. Maybe not actually writing them, but working on ideas and then jotting down any thoughts she may have, so that she's in a good place when she actually starts writing them. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It depends from college to college. But the places which have “Why X College” essays, usually keep them unchanged. The only ones that change are supplements with have a lot of short, i.e. 200-250 words, essays, e.g Brown, UChicago, Tufts. But they usually stay the same for a few years. And some places like UChicago allow you to use an essay prompt from a previous year.
