if you dont have a fake ID... are you at a huge disadvantage bc u cant get into clubs to drink? where else to people party at NYU? and do most have fakes?

this question has been answered every time you ask.

yes almost everyone has a fake id
people mostly pregame in dorms and go out to bars and clubs to party.
But overall, its going to depend on what group of friends you have.

Um, as someone who's a grown-up and can drink legally let me say that it's not all it's cracked up to be. In fact, I daresay drinking is downright boring.

You're in the middle of Manhattan, a place filled with galleries and museums that have openings and such regularly (I know, I've been to tons of openings and have met some NYU and Fordham kids) and you'd rather sit in a dank bar and get hammered with a bunch of silly kids?

Of course, I wouldn't have wanted to do that when I was 18 either. I'd much rather stay home and read.

.....harsh

when i visited nyu...i found that a lot of people just drank in their dorms. and my friend, who is 18 didnt have his fake anymore so he just had someone older who lived in his building go get alcohol. so the moral of the story is...we didnt have fake ids but got ****faced anyway

You have great access to drinking and clubbing at NYU b/c almost everybody eventually purchases a fake ID. But that shouldn't be a motivating factor to gain admission to NYU. I have a fondness for clubbing too, but like SydneyAnn says there are galleries and museums that should be just as entertaining, if not more, than getting drunk. Stay "stonecold" if possible cause you're going there to study :)

im going to NYU for the experience..not just to study. I've been drinking since I was 11, and yeah it can be boring, but it can be a lot of fun as well. it is, just as everything is, what you make of it.

Stop giving the poor guy tips on what to do with his life and just stick to his questions. no one cares about your opinions on what a good social life is, and if you think they do, start your own thread about it.

I eagerly await.

p.s. h20 this wasnt addressed to you.

im not one of those morning-afternoon drinkers who gets wasted every chance they get, im pretty serious about academics, in fact

this and the end of last year is when i started regularly drinking, and my grades are better than ever, im not suggesting that its because of this rather that if your responsible and keep your priorities straight theres nothing wrong with booooze(directed at the parent on this board)

Ooh, does that mean it was addressed to me, DCH? I feel special.

I also truly do believe that my suggestions were quite good and sensible. There's a reason the drinking age is 21, honey. These children who are away from mommy and daddy for the first time simply cannot handle it. A prime example would be the drunken NYU kid I saw not long ago (I knew he was from NUY by the fact that he yelled "I'm from NYU, ***** off!" to a cop) who split his lip open after falling while attempting to... walk. Kind of pathetic, no?

SydneyAnn...with all do respect you know full well that a drinking age of 21 is no more advantageous than a drinking age of 18 in this country. The higher drinking age just results in more binge drinking and hazardous behavior, unfortunately.

WHOA...I thought no one saw me yell at that cop!! hahaha...jk...that was a bad joke.

There is a reason the drinking age is 21? I can't think of one. European kids seem to handle alcohol just fine. Perhaps it's the ludicrous legal age that makes American kids irresponsible when they drink. Expose them to it sooner, and they will handle it better.

yeah if we're old enough to die for GW BUSH, then we can surely drink...

I agree with bigoh. It's the taboo of it being illegal that makes underage kids want to drink even more. Especially when they have parents who think underage drinking is worse than murder!

SydneyAnn: Drinking is a part of the college experience, stop your preaching and get over it.

ya...

"Of course, I wouldn't have wanted to do that when I was 18 either. I'd much rather stay home and read."

the fact you'd rather sit by yourself then socialize in college really voids your opinion.

I'm not saying drinking is necessary for college, but nearly everyone does it. Drinking is much better than stayin in and reading on weekend.

Stonecold: I don't have a fake and I don't have an issue going out- most of my friends actually DO NOT have fakes, and it is no biggie- there are many places that don't card that are also NOT sketchy.....

In terms of the 21 thing- I think it's a stupid law- really. Is there a difference between 18 and 21? Ehhh, not really...sure, some 21 year olds are more mature and responsible- but that's usually not the case- many of my friends are 21 and older, and they do not act "older" than I do- we are all young adults- and YES, if we can die for GW at 18, we should be able to drink, too- luckilly, in NYC, you can!

And in terms of experiencing NYC- yes, you should see museums and love them, and see theatre and have an incredible time there too- yet, I honestly believe that going out at night and partying on weekends is part of the NY experience. Some of the best times I've had in NYC have been when I'm out with friends at night- not getting wasted to the point of being gross- but really experiencing all NYC has to offer, day and night- so don't knock drinking in college- if you don't want to drink, just don't.

This from a parent of a soon to be college freshman (hopefully at NYU), who grew up and lives in NYC:
Drinking is not bad, not at 18 & not at 21. Drinking to excess where you don't know where you are, what you are doing or who you are doing it with is bad, at ANY age.
When I was 18, the drinking age was 18, they raised it to 19 a little before I turned 19, but I was grandfathered in and was still allowed to go to bars/clubs. When I was 20, they changed it to 21 and did not grandfather us in. So basically they said I was mature enough to handle it for 2 years, but now we changed our minds. It's all politics.
I agree that if you can die for the country, you should be able to have a drink while doing it.
Now, here is where you, as students, will not agree with me. While I think the drinking age should be 18, I believe they should raise the DRIVING AGE. This way, all those that don't have the maturity to realize that 2 beers can indeed impair your ability, will not get behind the wheel. I know most NYU students don't have cars in the city, but for the rest of the country it's an issue.
OK, off my soapbox...good luck to all at NYU! Make sure you take advantage of ALL NYC has to offer you, there is no other place like it!

totally agree they should change the driving age.... i mean i love being able to drive at 16 im mature and responsbile, but when you look at it in perspective, probably 20+ kids have gotten into fender benders (including me), some in serious accidents that required stays in the hospital and i know many who have DWI's and crashed

the fact is that msot high schoolers arent responsible enough to drive (its hard to admit, but true. I mean, consider some of the dumbas$es in your grades guys)

i think sydneyann got totally burned
