Question about ED/apps!

I'm not sure if this was answered elsewhere in these forums, but I have been wondering for quite some time now:

I'm planning to apply ED to my first-choice school and I'm concerned with apps. If I do get accepted ED, and I have all these other applications completed for RD (and paid for!) just in case I get rejected/deferred, wouldn't that mean I will be wasting my money on all those RD apps? Does "withdrawing" all other apps mean I get a full refund? If not, what would you suggest doing?

Thanks in advance. :)

I've never heard of a college giving a refund. But... Usually, you don't have to submit RD apps until after you hear back from your ED school (ED schools get back to you in mid-December; most RD schools' application deadlines are January 1).

However, doesn't that mean I will initially be paying for the RD apps? And if I do get accepted ED, all those apps I paid for and spent time on will be useless.

Also, say I don't pay for the RD apps until I hear from ED and I end up getting rejected/deferred. That would leave me only a couple weeks to finish my RD apps and submit them.

What many people that apply ED do is to get other applications ready to go, but not actually submit/mail them until the ED result is in. That way you won't be wasting your money (there are no refunds for withdrawn applications) and you won't be pressed for time in Dec to complete other applications if you are deferred or rejected.

Why not just finish them and wait for the ED results to come in? My friends finished their Ivy apps before they got accepted to Penn ED.

Best idea is this:

Do your ED app and submit.

Do your RD apps and do not submit, but FINISH THEM before you get your decision. Yes, you might end up doing extra work, but I will tell you right now that it is TERRIBLE to get rejected and then do all the other apps and essays in a few weeks. You feel crushed and for me, all the energy just drained out of me. It is a HUGE let down and it sucks to have to waste your Christmas vacation to finish up those apps.

If you are accepted, just trash the RD apps.

If you are rejected, you have them all ready to go- submit them then.

Ah, so basically you don't actually pay for the apps until you SUBMIT. Got it, thanks for clearing that up!
