Question about ED, EA, RD.

hi i dont know the difference among these terms, especially between ED and EA. can i EA to more than 3 colleges? i know i can only ED to one, but what about EA? i have no idea what these differences are.

ED stands for early decision, meaning if you are accepted, you have to go. Now some schools that use ED do not allow you to apply to other EA schools, and some do. It depends on that school (but if you are accepted under ED policy you must attend.)

There are 2 types of EA (early action.) Three schools use SCEA (stanford, harvard, yale) which stands for single-choice early action. Under this policy, you can only apply to their school during the early round of college admissions, however, if accepted, you are not obligated to attend. Regular EA (at many schools like mit, caltech, etc) you can apply to as many schools as you want during the earlry round. It is essentially just applying a little bit earlier.

wait so i really want to go to Yale, and if i ED there, i can't EA anywhere else during the time? and what if i want to ED to MIT, i can't EA to Yale at that time, cuz Yale doesn't allow EA to other colleges at their time? this is really confusing........ lol. i really appreciate ur help, im still a little confused.

Not all schools have ED (or SCEA or EA). If you apply to Yale EA, you're not allowed to apply to any other school. If you get in, you aren't bound to go. If you want to EA to MIT (MIT has regular EA, not ED), you can't EA to Yale, correct, because Yale is SCEA.

ugh wow its so complicating lol. aight but RD i can apply as much as i want right? it's just EA and ED that this rule applies.

ED (Early Decision): You apply early. If accepted, you MUST attend unless you can't pay the tuition(Princeton, Columbia and many other schools use ED).

EA (Early Admission): You apply early. If admitted, applicants are not forced to attend. You are allowed to apply to more than one school using EA.

SCEA (Single-Choice Early Admission): You apply early. If admitted, applicants are not forced to attend. You can only apply via SCEA to one school. Harvard, Yale and Stanfors use this.

Not that complicated really.
