Question about elective APs (like music, art, etc.)

I know most colleges look at AP course/exam grades very heavily, but what about elective APs? Like AP Music Theory, AP Art History, etc. Do colleges look at these as “real” APs or do they care more about the academics ones (sciences, math, history, English)?

I’m curious because I’m interested in taking AP Music Theory next year, but if colleges don’t weigh non-academic AP courses as much as they do academic ones, I may take it senior year instead to fill up one of my free slots. Thanks.

I'm in AP Music Theory right now, and honestly, I would have to say (frmo personal experience) that they weigh it the same. They ARE real APs, but if you have a strict science/math course selection, and just randomly choose AP music theory, of course, it will look like you just took it for fun. But if you do choir, orchestra, or anything, then it'll look like you're more into the field of the arts.

It's a really fun class!! I hope you take it, despite what I said. Hope what i said helps!

Heh. Honestly, I do have mostly core academic classes, and I haven't taken band or chorus in high school. However, I do have a sincere interest in music (I just didn't really find my school's band or chorus appropriate for me). I've been taking piano lessons for many years now. My main concern is that I don't want colleges to think that I just selected it randomly, like you say, because I don't have any other music classes on my high school transcript. I really am interested in music.

BTW, if I do end up taking it...it's not too hard, is it? =)

Any more input on this issue? Would it still appear random even if I told them on my application that I play piano? Thanks in advance.
