Question about essay topic

Hi guys,
I am working on the common app essay topic. My question is, should the essay really be about what is not already mentioned in other sections of the application? I come from an Asian country, where students don't get much of extracurricular activity. Since my major is Mathematic, you can guess that I spend most of the time doing Maths and stuff. I do get a few insights about Maths vs life, which I can write an essay about.
But the admission officers will have known that I am tightly affiliated with Maths, based on a number of Maths contest prize I have. So is it a bad idea to write about Maths? If it is, I think I'm in big trouble.

I don’t think it’s a terrible idea if it is truly your passion. What you don’t want to do is reiterate stuff that is clear from other parts of your application. So don’t write about the contests, or how your passion for math helped your SAt scores or something like that.

What I would do, if possible, is pick a couple of really specific examples of how math has influenced or affected your life as a whole. These examples should reflect qualities in you that aren’t apparent in the numbers and statistics on your application. If you do this, you should be fine.

my thanks, bookworm33 :D
