If I say on my application that I volunteered at a place for a year but only volunteered for 8 months, would the school call to confirm the amount of hours/days I volunteered? Would they be able to find out?

I doubt they’d bother to. It’s up to you as to how honest you want to be.

Theres not really any place on the cal poly application for you to say you volunteered for a year anywhere. It simply asks for average hours a week put into extracurricular activities…with 21+ being the max option. unless you’re a transfer, i dont know if that application differs.

is there any way I can check out the application without actually filling it out?

To put it bluntly, extracurricular activity/volunteering will not help out your application. Your gpa and Sat/act is pretty much used in admission.

To put it bluntly…
.
extracurricular activity/volunteering WILL help out your application.

That’s what is wrong with these boards… people just give their opinions and not the facts.

Yeah, there’s a place on the application to list this type of stuff, but honestly, I really don’t think Cal Poly cares very much. I mean, they get like over 30,000 applicants so I think they focus most on GPA and test scores. They might take extracurriculars into consideration if they’re trying to make a decision between you and another person with a similar GPA and test scores, but otherwise I don’t think it makes much of a difference.

oh ok well I guess I will just check off 21+ hours cuz I’m volunteering 4 hours a week. By the time I apply, I will have much more than 21 hours!

That is what I implied. Though it says extracurriculars are taken into consideration, it is very minor.

Please show everyone where it says, “extracurriculars are taken into consideration, but it is very minor”. Provide any and every bibliography and URL annotation that supports your words…

This is my point… that folks want to give you a touchy-feely opinion without being able to back it up. And for some reason… they can say, “In my opinion…” but instead state it like it is fact.

Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but I believe it asks for hours per week, not hours overall.

Dude…really…

OP: VentureMan have provided the correct information saying extracurriculars HELP your application. What the website or VentureMan fails to point out is HOW MUCH extracurriculars help your application. And in my experience with my own and everyone in my high school class who applied to slo, it is your GPA and SAT/ACT that matters the most.

Yes it is hours per week so I would consider picking up more hours. And I agree with the majority, I would focus more on improving your GPA and getting superstar test scores. (Cal Poly prefers ACT). I wish I had because I do have a great number of hours in work and extracurricular but my GPA suffered because of it.
