Question about FA...

I have been trying to get ahold of somebody at my local community college for days now but have been sent to an automated answering machine to leave a message and number to get a call back. Still no call back. The question I have is that I was originally going to be taking Summer classes, and I had applied for FA to help and pay for these classes. Due to some thing my finical aid process was taking a lot more than expected for the summer I 2014-2015. There were “unsatisfied requirements” that caused a hold on the process. In the mean time payments were going due. So for my summer classes that I had already registered to not be dropped I went ahead and borrowed some money from my parents to pay for the classes till my FA came in. The classes started and still no FA, the process was still on hold. I did not have the money to pay for the books and programs necessary for my classes. There were already assignments coming due that i could not do because I did not have the necessary tools. So my only other option was to drop these classes. I didn’t even bother to sign up for Summer II classes. I have already been granted finical aid for the fall 2015-2016, and I was wondering will dropping the classes that I paid for and did not receive finical aid for affect my eligibility for the finical aid I have already been granted for the fall of 2015-2016?

You need to ask the Financial Aid office at your school. Why aren’t your parents helping you with costs of books and fees?

As a college student hoping for Financial aid, please learn to spell it: F I N A N C I A L. non finical ("finn e Kal).

If you dropped properly by the due date you may be able to get a refund or a partial refund of the money you paid.

Taking and dropping summer classes should not affect your aid for fall as long as you don’t owe any money, unless those classes were required for something. There is usually only enough financial aid for fall and spring. If you got financial aid for summer you wouldn’t likely have enough for the school year.

It’s a local community college? Find out the hours their offices are open and go in person.

First Ive already tried asking but because its summer they only have a few people working and I can never seem to find anyone to help me. Second my parents have already helped me as much as they can, they do not make enough money to help me through college and also support themselves and my brothers. Thirdly, I know how to spell FINANCIAL AID but for some reason my laptop always corrects it to that and I just gave up trying to correct it. Honestly didn’t think it was that big of a deal as long as my point got across on what I was trying to say.

OP, I suggest you summarize your situation with the extra info stripped out so that the Financial Aid folks can help you more easily. Like this:

I applied for Financial Aid for the first summer session.

My FA approval was delayed, so I paid the registration fees myself. I was unable to continue the class without receiving FA, so I dropped the class.

Will this affect my aid package for 2015-2016? If so, what can I do to make sure I still receive the amount of aid I was initially awarded?

Will I be able to receive a refund for the summer registration fees? What forms do I need to file?

And always be sure to thank people for helping you, even if they’re being grumpy. I cannot tell you how many times folks have gone out of their way to help me just because I’m polite.

Yes, make sure you check to see if you are entitled to a refund for the classes dropped and what you need to do to get that money back if you are. Do not delay, there may be deadlines for filing any necessary forms.

Trigger alert- “some things” and “unsatisfied requirements”? If this is code for you haven’t made Satisfactory Academic Progress (i.e. haven’t passed enough courses or have withdrawn/gotten incompletes from too many classes) you can keep leaving all the messages you want- you need to find out what held up your financial aid application and what you need to do to clear the deck.

If the previous problems have been resolved- than yes- proceed as per the posters above. But if you owe money from a previous semester, or haven’t passed enough classes per your college’s requirements, or are on academic probation for whatever reason, you’ve got to clear these up before next semester starts.

Maybe start with the Academic Dean instead of the Financial Aid folks???
