Question about Feb start pref on application

Hi-my d23 is submitting her RD application to middlebury. She prefers Fall but would consider Feb if best option school wise. Should she check the box Prefer Fall or I would like to be considered for both September and February admission. wants to maximize chances of getting accepted. thx.

If your daughter allows Middlebury to choose the semester at which she becomes eligible to enroll, this would increase the number of places available for her. With this approach, a qualified applicant would increase her chances of being accepted.

Agree with @merc81 and not sure how Midd handles admissions but if they have few that mark February, they might automatically shuffle you there, even if otherwise they might accept you to Fall.

Not sure they would tell you they do if they ask - and perhaps they simply take the best for Fall.

But if I were applying, I’d have that question - although it may never be answered.

My feeling is that if your daughter is open to accepting a Feb admission, and could get excited about finding a cool “non-college” experience for a few months in the Fall, she should apply for either/or. In the case of my daughter, she was clear that she wanted to start her college experience in September, so when she applied, she said Fall only. We have another friend who applied and only wanted to go if he was admitted as a Feb, so it is truly an individual decision.

Our D23 son was admitted to Middlebury as a Feb ED1 a few weeks ago. He actually selected Feb as his preference as he wanted a gap semester. Middlebury looks for “Febby” kids to ideally fill those spots, and he definitely has Febby qualities such as willing to take risks, lead others, and basically just not follow the usual path. I personally think the combination of his ‘Feb qualities’ + his preference to be a Feb was a big plus to his application and one of the reasons he was accepted.

If your application screams ‘Febby’ to Middlebury, and you are willing to be a Feb, I think it helps - possibility a lot. If your application doesn’t scream ‘Feb’, I’m not sure it moves the needle much as I don’t think they want to put students they don’t think will thrive as a Feb into those spots.

Here is a quote from a NYTimes article about Feb qualities: ‘At Middlebury College, where one-sixth of the class arrives for the first time in February, Greg Buckles, dean of admissions, said, “We kind of cast about for these ‘Febby’ qualities,” like risk-taking, entrepreneurial spirit and a drive to lead.’
