Sorry if this has been answered before. I have searched here and the UVA site and can't find this answer. Will Financial Aid packages come out before the May 1 decision deadline? I saw a timeline on the UVA site that says Financial Aid Awards notifications come out in June. Is that right??

UVA is my son's first choice but he is holding off on accepting until he gets Financial Aid packages from the colleges he applied to and was accepted to. We hope this information comes out in time to be part of his final decision, though he will choose UVA if at all possible.
Thanks.

From the Student Financial Services website:

"Students who wish to receive a preliminary financial aid award before the May 1 admissions commitment date should submit all application requirements as early as possible. Applications are then reviewed based upon the date the application is considered complete. In other words, the earlier a student submits all application requirements, the earlier the student’s application will be reviewed. Students who complete their applications after March 1 are not guaranteed a preliminary award prior to May 1.

It is important for students to continue to monitor requests for information on their SIS To Do List. It is possible that SFS may request additional documents and forms before a preliminary award can be offered. In these cases, all requested information must be submitted before the application review can be completed. Delays in submitting requested information may result in a delay in providing a preliminary award."

I was admitted EA and got mine over two weeks ago. I can’t help but think that that they saw my family income and quickly dismissed me, as I received nothing haha.

Did you get email notification or just a mailing? My son was an EA admit but nothing so far, we are also OOS. I guess he needs to check online to see if anything is missing.

@bearcat96 Yes he was admitted EA and we received the FA package last week. Very happy with it, other than they are asking him to take more in student loans than we would like and didn’t offer a work study. We are going to DOTL next week so we plan to talk to them to see if he could transfer some of that to a work study. He is so excited because he will be able to attend.

@Mocha99 He just noticed in the SIS that it said something about a financial award letter (not sure of the wording) but he clicked on the link and we could get to it there, or by clinking the link to view Financial Aid 2014. We did not receive anything in the mail.

We also received an email to check SIS for financial aid. We are grateful for the financial aid that will allow our S to go to UVA if he makes the decision to go. He is still waiting to hear from other schools before he makes his decision.

Hey all, the folks in SFS (Student Financial Services) post packages pretty regularly. They send an email to those who have a package going up in SIS.

Just like us, they are paperless, so SIS is the place to go to check on your aid application. You need to check regularly because there are times when they need more information to finish their process and they’ll post about it there.

@Living61 His letter says Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans and Federal Perkins Loan. I have to do some research to find out more about the different loans, plus we will talk to the Financial Aid department when we visit next week to better understand the financial aid package.

I applied EA and sent in all of my materials by March 1st. I am anxiously awaiting my aid package. If UVA provides good aid I will be attending but it sounds like it could be pretty late before they send me my package. They just asked for my 1040s to be faxed again last week also. Anyone have any guesses as to when il get my award information?

In answer to a question above, I have not heard of UVa expecting a US family of an undergrad to take out anything other than federal stafford loans (and federal Perkins loans in some but not all cases) in order to meet need.

Of course, a family could decide to take out federal Plus loans for their own reasons, such as if they have unusually high family expenses that are not considered in the financial aid formulas, or if the student doesn’t want to do work study or doesn’t work over the summer.

Someone joked on CC.about someone posting about their financial aid package from another college: "I got a really great financial aid package that covered everything. However, can someone tell me what “$30,000 a year of PLUS” means?

If someone does not receive a preliminary financial aid award before May 1, I’d suggest trying to ask for a short extension of the decision deadline from admissions. In that case, I think I’d also put down a deposit somewhere else. However, my experience was the UVa’s need based financial aid was equal or better than most colleges and universities (except the very richest universities that may still be able to afford to downplay loans). For upper income students, you will find that many other universities will offer merit aid, which is extremely limited at UVa.
