Greek Life at UCLA is pretty strong, some people comment that it’s a lot more prominent than they initially expected it to be. That isn’t to say that it’s overbearing or anything, but you can definitely tell there’s a Greek scene on campus.

Now, if you like partying, you’re definitely doing yourself a favor by joining a fraternity. There really isn’t such a thing as a “party frat”, since most every fraternity here (in IFC at least) definitely parties. Raids, exchanges, date parties, “sober events”–there are always things to do during the week on top of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights so don’t feel like there won’t be very many opportunities for you to get your fix. You’ll have a good time.

Some fraternities definitely go harder than others, though. The names that always seem to pop up are Sig Ep, Sig Chi, ZBT, SAE, Beta, and Sig Nu. These houses are the ones that have the largest presence on campus too, so if that’s how you’re judging popularity then I’d say look into those. Granted, a handful of top houses are on social probation as of really recently, so their Spring Quarters are pretty much shot for this year. The only big name houses that are actually in good standing are Sig Ep, ZBT, Beta, and Sig Nu. Since you’re just now thinking of applying you don’t really have to worry about social prob since the situation may end up being completely different for you, but reputations and social calendars don’t exactly bounce back after 2+ years of probation.

As far as how wild the parties get, it really depends. Thursday nights end up becoming pretty standard as far as college parties go, with an occasional rager or themed party thrown into the mix. Quarterlies (pretty much a house’s main, headliner party for the quarter) are where you’ll probably see some outrageous Animal House stuff, and a lot of top houses thrown down for their quarterlies. I know Sig Chi does some sweet themed parties, SAE and ZBT usually pack their houses full, and Beta has a ridiculously huge Fall quarterly. Pretty much every top house has its crazy nights and its standard parties, but even the regular Thursday nights will be a huge step up from whatever you did during high school.
