Hi All

I'm a recently graduated senior in HS, and I need some advice. I live in Michigan and can either go to Eastern Michigan University or a local Community College. Cost isn't an issue, the difference is negligible. Either way, I want to transfer somewhere in the next couple of years, to somewhere in Pennsylvania or Virginia. My question is, would it be better for me to go to the bigger University or the Community College? Which would look better, or does it matter at all?

Thanks in advance for all your help. :)

It shouldn’t really matter. At Eastern Michigan University, you will be around a more traditional student body since it is a four year school, so if you decide not to transfer, you will like it there more. However, it seems that (according to US News) Eastern Michigan is a Tier 3 Masters University, meaning that it is probably a commuter school just like your local community college.

If you are very strongly planning to transfer, the Community College will be advantageous because more students will be transfering and you will get transfer advising. You will also have an advantage if you want to transfer to UofM or MSU. If you want to go to a school in Pennsylvania or Virginia, they could care less where you went (but probably care a lot about how you do - at least if it is an elite school like UVA or Penn).

If cost is not a difference, than I’d pick a university. A high GPA from a university than from a cc better demostrates your ability to succeed in your intended transfer school. Additionally, if your transfer school requires certain classes to apply, a university would most likely have a better course selection to meet those requirements.

Really appreciate the help guys.

Thanks!
