Question about GPA

Hey y’all, I’m in 8th grade taking 3 high school credit classes, and my GPA after the 1st semester was 3.67 and now it’s going up to a 3.83… I’m worried that this will later on affect my chances to go to some prestigious or good college/university after high school… what do you think? I know it’s early to start thinking about this but It just bothers me to see the “.83” next to the 3, I plan on studying medicine, and I know my likes and dislikes will change but for now, I’m set on medicine like I’ve been my entire life. What do you think about my GPA in 8th grade?

Colleges don’t care about grades from before high school.

What if its a highschool credit class? do they separate each gade and calculate a new gpa starting in highschool even if i took highschool credit classes that account for gpa?

They still don’t care. It should be P/F on your transcript.

Ok thanks but im just curious, how do you know this?

On my school transcript, the high school credits I received in middle school show up with their letter grades, but they are not computed into my GPA. I’m guessing policies vary by school, so I’d just ask your guidance counselor about it.

Also, a 3.83 would be viable for many good schools. I don’t see how it would cause you trouble in studying medicine.

I fail to see how such a blanket statement can be applied to all high schools, awesomepolyglot. You don’t know what OP’s HS does with its GPAs. OP should ask them and also find something else to worry about since this has been causing distress for quite some time now.

@bodangles fair.

OP, the fact that you’re taking 3 high school classes at a time in middle school is fairly impressive.

While true that HS policies differ, tt’s doubtful that colleges will factor 8th grade grades into their decision process, and med schools definitely will not. Colleges expect that a student will have in intellectual maturity between 8th and 12th grades.

It’s fairly common in NY for advanced kids to take the Algebra leg of the 3 year Algebra, Geometry, Algebra2/Trig state regents required math sequence in 8th grade. Same for one of either Biology or Earth Science. My D took NYS Regents Algebra and Earth Science (lab course) in 8th grade, and her numerical grade as well as her NYS Regents test grade show up on her HS transcript. As do her Spanish 1 and Studio Art 1 grades. She started 9th grade in HS with Spanish 2 and is currently a junior in Spanish IV Honors. Nothing our GC has told us indicates that colleges don’t see or count her Algebra, Earth Science, or Spanish 1 grades.

On my transcript, it only shows the letter grades for the high school classes that I took in middle school. Also, it shows the state-mandated EOC score that I received for Integrated Math I/Algebra I.

You’re fine. A 3.83 from a middle schooler in high school classes is great.

If you wanna be a pre-med when you go to undergraduate, you’ll probably find it wiser to go to the cheaper accredited school than it is for the expensive AAA school.

Honestly, it probably doesn’t matter just because you have four more years to earn credits, allowing your GPA to adjust accordingly. I also took high school classes in middle school and for me they do affect my GPA in high school since they’re credit-bearing and transfer to your high school transcript. I wouldn’t worry about it though, just focus on doing well in high school.
