I was going to use a timed write, as that is all we've done so far in my English class. Should I retype it?

Then it’s not graded, right?

Yes, if you and/or your teacher’s handwriting are really, really hard to read. However, you should probably do the following things:

1) Contact the Reed admissions office, and check that they’re ok with this (they may prefer a non-timed essay from your junior year). Assuming they’re fine with it:
2) Find some way to include your teachers comments on the typed copy (I suggest trying Microsoft Word’s comment feature).
3) In the application, include a copy of the original, handwritten essay so they can see that you haven’t altered the text in the typed version.
4) Also include some brief note explaining that this was a timed essay (and therefore not necessarily your best work), and give the reason why you chose to send them that instead of a non-timed essay.

Hey, I also have a question about Reed’s writing sample. Do I include multiple drafts of the essay so they can see the changes and all the comments? Or should I only send one draft of an essay with all its comments?

Send the final essay with comments

Any suggestions on shrinking down the size of a pdf. I have everything in order BUT I can’t send it because of the size…and if I shrink it to an appropriate size, its too blurry…

Method 2 looks complicated (and requires Adobe Acrobat 7), but Method 1 looks fairly simple.
