question about housing - busey vs 6 pack vs bromley

ok so due to the new lottery system, I ended up being assigned to busey hall for the fall. (im an incoming freshman). I sent in a form for a change because i'd really like to be in the 6-pack/ikenberry area. basically i'm wondering what the likelihood is of actually getting switched to a different dorm is (i submitted the room change request the same day i received my assignment, if that matters).

also, im considering the possibility of switching to bromley, since i would much rather be there than in busey if my hall change doesn't get approved. i'm curious how the social atmosphere is at bromley and whether i should switch now or try and hold out a little longer in the hopes that i get switched to the 6 pack.

any input on any of the 3 dorms i mentioned would be greatly appreciated.

oh, and money isn't an object, i just want a dorm where i'll be comfortable and have a good chance at meeting people and having fun

I actually made a thread similar to this about two weeks ago: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-illinois-urbana-champaign/1155600-i-got-stuck-par.html

I had all 4 combos (north/south & double/triple) as choices 1-4 and both combos of ISR as 5-6 on my housing contract. But for whatever reason I got stuck in Babcock Hall in PAR. Looks like you are in a similar situation by getting put in Busey-Evans (assuming Busey wasn’t anywhere on your housing contract).

I also submitted the hall change request very early (exactly 2 hours after the decision came out). I got a call from a nice lady at housing back on the 8th who actually commented about how I was one of the first people she was supposed to call. She said there were plenty of single rooms (extra $1,500 per year) available in both North and South Ike (the two halves of the six pack) as well as in ISR.

I ended up opting out of any single rooms since having a roommate really helps meeting new people, at least imo. So now I’m on the list for one of the handful of double rooms still available in the six pack. She said the remaining doubles rooms are extremely limited and that applying for the change early will really help my chances (should also help you as well). She also said that it takes 4-6 weeks to process the request and that I should receive an email in about a month.

As far as busey is concerned I haven’t really heard anything about it. I’m a guy so I didn’t bother reading up on the all female dorms.

However I have a friend of a friend who just finished his freshman year while staying at Bromley. Bromley has the largest and most luxurious (by College dorm standards) dorms at U of I, but the food sucks. The social life in general isn’t as good as public housing since it’s more of an apartment setting where everyone keeps their doors closed a lot. That’s not to say it’s not social though, Bromley is also known for a very strong Greek presence since it’s close to a lot of frats.

Overall it’s hard to say which dorm anyone is going to be comfortable in. Basically they’re all crappy. Private ones (like Bromley) have more amenities (i.e. semi-private bathrooms), but they are generally less social and you are only allowed to use your meal plan at that ONE dining hall. Public ones are your typical not much bigger than a jail sell college dorms, but people are generally very social from what I’ve heard (especially in the six pack) and your meal plan can be used at ANY public dining hall.

Anyway, those are my two cents. You might also want to get some feedback from current students as well.

thanks! that actually helped a lot. i guess i’ll just keep waiting in the hopes of being switched. good luck to you too!
