Ive been lurking for quite awhile and ive noticed that there is a huge difference between instate and out of state scores(SAT/ACT). I was wondering what do you guys think is an average SAT/ACT score for an instater that would be acceptable to get into chapel hill?

My son is instate. He made a 1400/2040 overall. He didn’t go to any prep classes.

Honestly? I’m fairly positive there’s no one real number. While a lot of people say you should get at least a 2000 to be safe, that’s not necessarily true; UNC definitely looks at the big picture. One of my good friends got into UNC instate with a SAT score in the 1700s. To balance that out, her GPA, extracurriculars, essays, and teacher recommendation were all fantastic.

Basically, don’t sweat over the SAT too much if you’re instate. Try and get the highest number you can (remember, they superscore it, so if you have the means I’d suggest taking it more than once if you think it would help), but if you send them an application really strong and passionate in other areas, it won’t matter too much.

^totally agree with above. i got in with a pretty low score, around mid 1800s.
to be safe, i would ATLEAST get a 1800. hope this helps :)
