hi,
im an INSTATE junior who's thinking about going into UNC. I'm from wake county and will take the sats in may. From your guyses experience, what stats are needed to safely get into UNC, perhaps with Financial Aid and Scholarships. I'm in about top 10% of my class.

Yeah i am from Forsyth County, another major county in NC, and its not easy to get in from the densly populated countys. I would say, have atleast 5 AP's, SAT above 1300 (old scale), and A LOT of ec's. Good essays don't hurt either.

Essays are actually really important. Just be well rounded. UNC is really good about looking at the whole applicant, not just the numbers.

i am instate and i got in with a 3.6 unweighted gpa, 1310 sat, editor of high school newspaper and ive taken six APs.....alot of people at my school also applied and got in, my stats were probably in the middle of everyobdy who applied from my school in terms of how good/bad they are....but of course if you are looking for scholarships your stats would probably need to be alot better than mine

The urban myth of UNC limiting acceptances from certain counties in NC is alive and well. I had a conversation with someone who used to be in admissions at UNC -- she laughed and said that there are some rumors that admissions are limited even by neighborhood. It's not true---they don't have time to do that kind of differentiation. The only reason that county is asked on the app is because financial aid uses it to award some merit and need based aid that is funded for specific counties. Give it up, people. We're from Charlotte (one of the areas that continues the urban legend), and there are lots of EA kids from Mecklenburg County....

I totally agree with you astrophysicsmom. I'm in Orange county and I've heard a lot of that rubbish too. For some reason some people I know insist that they have quotas or whatever per region when they don't, and they specifically state that they don't publically or privately.

chillmandan, so did you get in regular decision or were you deferred at first. I was deferred about a month ago. I was wondering if alot of people who are deferred are accepted.

yeah, i was deferred too...

SAT 1250 (probably why),

how the %&$* do u have that many classes in one semester?

we run on a 7 period day.

No, i got in EA. Hate to break it to you but I don't know many kids who got in after deferral, but don't give up hope.

Thanks man. I thought my application was perfect, but I guess I was lacking in some parts. I did everything I could in my power in the past month to increase my chances of getting in. I ended up with 4 B's and 3 A's, and they were all AP classes. Hopefully this is good enough. I also took the SAT last saturday on standby. I did all I could do, but now it is a matter of waiting.

I was deferred, and eventually rejected a couple of years ago: 4.0 weighted, but I was only in the top 25% of my class; 1310 SAT (old version); weak ec's; only 3 AP's. I think if you have a better class rank and strong ec's, you stand a better chance than I did.

well this is my profile

3.7 GPA unweighted
4.9 GPA Weighted
Top 5% of class
11 EC's
SAT-1210
Numerous awards for debate team
14 AP's

I think it was because of my SAT, but I retook it and I think that I stand a good chance of getting in.

oh crap, I will get rejected if u got deferred with those stats ^^^^

My SAT is 1260 (M+V)...so not much better.

I have a 4.7 weighted and pretty good EC's

fobby, they don't accept SAT scores from January. My friend called (and I asked in the admissions chat) and an admissions officer said twice that January is too late.

Well ns347, you never know. There is not a set formula for getting in. I know people who applied from my school who applied EA, and got in with stats not even close to mine. 19382, I talked to someone who is on the admisssions board, and he told me that my SAT was low, and I asked him if I should retake it, and he said that if I felt it was worth my time, then I should. I asked him if they would receive the score on time, and he said yes. The receptionist that picks up the phone said no, but the person I spoke to is on the admissions board, and he said they do, so I took it anyways. I am going to call them on the 10th to make sure that they got my scores.

oh yea, im from Wake county

fobby, the scores don't come out until the 15th. How would UNC have them on the 10th?
