Question about living west of UCLA

I'm gonna attend UCLA this fall and will be moving there with my wife soon. Family housing isn't available right away, is it? So I guess we have to find our own apartment.

I was wondering what people think about the following areas: Santa Monica, Venice, Brentwood, Westwood, West LA.

I know Brentwood and Westwood are easy commutes, but how about the other areas? Also, is it possible to find a nice place (large studio or 1 bedroom) for around $1200-$1300 in these neighborhoods?

I'd appreciate any input regarding our housing situation...

All are great, safe areas except Venice can be a bit shady. Venice is the least expensive of the areas but also furthest away from campus. Santa Monica and Brentwood are extremely pricy. Westwood is your best bet, as it is closest to campus, but West LA is slightly less expensive. You may find places in your price range in either Westwood or West LA.

thanks, how do you think the commute would be from SM or Brentwood?

The commute isn't that bad from Santa Monica.

Without/minimal traffic (maybe 10 am to 12 pm and later than 8 pm at night, before 7 am in the morning) UCLA is about 3-5 minutes from most areas in Brentwood, 10-12 minutes from most areas in Santa Monica.

With typical traffic, Brentwood can be 10-15 minutes while Santa Monica can be anywhere from 25-30 minutes. The most congested area is Westwood Village.

thanks for the detailed information.

is there any other helpful website besides craigslist to find apartments?

maxx99,

Married student housing DOES exist. [Linkage.[/url]

There are services other than craigslist.

I've heard Westside Rentals can be decent:

Also check out the listings given by UCLA Housing:

If you want to save money, some parts of Palms aren't half bad.
