Do any current students or alumni know what Cornell's policy is about multitools (like Leathermans)? I know they come equipped with a knife, but are they considered deadly weapons and are you allowed to wear one on your belt?

I think they are fine. Plenty of engineering/outdoorsy types have a Swiss army knife on their key chain.

On that same note, what about pocket knifes in general? I have two that I was planning on bringing, a 3" and a 3.5", both are legal according to NY state law and I think of them as tools. Any reason I should be worried about campus police bothering me as I usually just clip the 3" on the inside of my pocket.

When I read the stuff about weapons it seems they're more concerned with illegal or large knives and items that non-weapon purposes(eg a baseball bat isn't a weapon weapon because it's used in a recreational activity, even though it's technically a large dangerous club). Does anyone see any reason why I might be wrong here? I don't want to step on the toes of campus security but I also don't want to bother them needlessly with things like pocket knives.

I think you are fine. A blade over four inches might draw attention, but as long as you follow the Campus Code of Conduct and don't stab anybody with them nobody should bother you.

This is Ithaca we are talking about, surrounded by the great outdoors, so a pocket knife is often handy to have around.

What are pocket knives typically used for anyway? I ask because I've never needed one. No one I know of carries around a pocket knife, but I doubt campus police will give you any trouble for it.

yea, you'll be fine. my roomate last year collected knives for the hell of it and had crazy amounts of contraband stuff: knives, darts, a pair of machetes...

I learned how to sleep with my eyes open and did so for the first month.

Go look up NY laws. NYC laws are pretty weird and harsh, but those shouldn't apply. I believe as long as the object is question is not a switch blade, gravity knife, pilum something knife, etc. Cornell may be different though. 'Deadly weapons' are not allowed on-campus or living areas...depends if the head of whatever decides to classify the object as a deadly weapon or not. There's no harm in asking, I suppose.
