Has anyone come across a policy prohibiting students from keeping a knife in their dorm room? Could it be applied to personal care items like a Swiss army pocket knife or small blade in a toiletry kit? Surely a college that has dorm suites with kitchenettes must allow cooking knives, no?

I was told that the schools are only banning the hunting knives and switchblade knives from the dorm.

The Swiss Army pocket knives and kitchen knives are consider as a tool. Of course, to bring a full set of “professional” kitchen knives to the dorm would not make senses.

You could have your student call housing and ask if you are concerned about something you were planning on sending. We sent a small paring knife to cut fruit and a leatherman (ie utility tool) without even thinking about it. I don’t think he touched the paring knife but the leatherman was heavily used (engineers love their tools).

I take college dorm rules with a grain of salt in both directions. They may not list a specific item - tea kettle, knife - but when they do inspections, they may decide that particular item is contraband. They may not write you up with a violation but they’ll confiscate it. So I assume nothing: get sensible stuff, don’t leave it where they can find it.

Each school has different inspection policies. Those are worth learning.

Thanks! That’s what I expected, but it’s good to get others’ thoughts/experiences too.
