Musical Theater Mavens: How do theater companies go about hiring their musicians for the summer season? How would a college student musician (percussion) go about finding summer work with a theater company? Any advice appreciated.
Some theatres only hire union musicians. Other theatres, like CLOC, audition you (see http://www.collegelightoperacompany.com/orchestra.html). For many others, it is word of mouth. If you know the MD, that’s the best way to get a gig playing a show. I would check each theatre and see if they have info on their websites…
I’m not 100% but you may want to check out some of the regional auditions, like Strawhats, I could be wrong (somebody will step in) but I swear I saw a few theaters listed they were looking for musicians.
S is currently at OTA unified auditions. Some companies are looking for musicians (some Union, some not) as well as actors and tech (also interviewing today) but as far as I can tell there are no musicians auditioning today. Do music schools get those postings?
