Is the NW neighborhood really as bad as I've read about? I am going to be a freshman at IU, coming from OOS and want to meet people. Would NW be a good fit, or is it really hard to study there? I read on a previous thread that everyone from NW either "goes greek, fails or drops out." Obviously thats an exaggeration but is it really that bad?

As a parent I’ve become a very big fan of LLCs and thematic communities of which there are many. You might look into it on the RPS site. Truly any dorm you live will provide plenty of opportunity for you to meet people. I’ll let other students tackle the NW issue because I’m sure my opinion is vastly different than a student opinion. One thing you might do though is check out some of the threads on Facebook from IU dorms. It might give you some ideas.

My daughter is also OOS and will be a freshman (if IU is the school she ends up attending). Her first choice is Sports and Society thematic community which is in Northwest. Her first residence hall location is NW and her second thematic community is Outdoor Adventures (not the LLC) and it’s in Central. I’m hoping wherever she lands, she’ll be able to balance her dorm life. If she continues what she’s been doing throughout her h.s. years, she’ll be okay. I honestly don’t believe that everyone messes up over NW. I bet you woudn’t either. :)

NW has a lot of business students and wannabe business students, it also has jocks and a couple llcs, the loudness level depends on the floor u are on but overall all nw dorms esp. mcnutt are extremely social dorms but some floors such as mine are quiet enough to study all day but some go to the library anyways

I would look at the KLLC if you are thinking of Business, my son was in it and it offered a lot of opportunity. The Kelly Living Learning Center was in McNutt-Crone they had the whole Crone Dorm. If you want a more quiet dorm but really interested in Business that is might be the way to go.

If you like to party I would suggest not going into the KLLC. I think they are expanding next, plus there are a lot of classes right in McNutt for Freshman in Business.

cheezwhiz^ You can still party and be in the Kelley LLC lol

I think I heard that next year they are making McNutt all Business Students, so that might be a good choice if you are a business student and it will definitely mellow it out. Also, McNutt has the best C-Store.

McNutt is not as insane as everyone says it is. Period. Same with the rest of Northwest. There will be parties in dorms everywhere across campus, you will not be able to avoid them wherever you decide to live.

It is going to depend on your floor. McNutt has its crazy floors and then its not so crazy. same with any other dorm on the campus but if you go Southeast you will just more than likely not get a crazy floor than if you went NW.

Simple one word answer to the OP: NO!
