If i apply for NYU stern undergraduate, do my application goes to genertal admission (the one with ~30% acceptance rate) or does Stern has a way higher standard than other schools in nyu that they look at the apps individually. And also, is it possible if I go to other department and then change my major that is inside stern?
Your application will go to Stern and they have a much lower acceptance rate. Transferring into Stern within NYU isn’t easier than transferring into Stern from another school. They will still look at your high school GPA and SAT score but they will also factor in your college extracurriculars and college GPA as well.
Basically, there’s no way to “sneak” into Stern without actually being accepted by the Stern admissions office.
I’m pretty sure your application first goes to your assigned NYU admissions rep who will then send it on to Stern. Stern acceptance rate is much lower than NYU as a whole, but I’ve heard that getting into Stern via traditional admission is easier than getting in via internal transfer.
Stern’s acceptance rate is around 9% and Stern’s transfer acceptance rate is around 9% too.
@Musktard *15%, according to Stern’s website.
@Jarjarbinks23 link?
Does anyone know if it is possible to hear before April 1 if you applied RD to Stern?
Not for RD but they DO have early application programs
ED is binding so that wasn’t happening. Hate that we have to wait until April!
Stern’s gotten much harder man. I was rejected with a 35 ACT, 3,. 7 gpa, and solid ec’s. However, their acceptance rate probably hovers around 18-20 percent, so I wouldn’t be too worried.
@sgballsta The acceptance rate is around 9%. Also, I went through your post history and your rejection doesn’t really indicate that Stern is getting any more selective.
@Musktard *15 percent.

The 9% is how many more applications were received. More selective than cornell
“More selective than Cornell”
Cornell’s reported overall Fall 2014 freshman acceptance rate, aggregated over all seven of its undergraduate colleges, was 14.2% The Dyson school (its undergrad business program) reported an 8% freshman admittance rate.
I can’t find the individual college breakouts just now. However, by extrapolation from other years, my guess is, the acceptance rate for its Cornell’s College of Arts & Sciences was probably in the 11-1/2%-12-1/4% range,
(got timed out apparently) NYU’s overall freshman acceptance rate for Fall 2014 was 35%. Per #11 above, NYU Stern’s reported acceptance rate was 15%.
@monydad 14%?.. In 10 years from now, will Cornell only have a 6% rate and Harvard has a 1% rate?
I don’t know what post #14 is supposed to mean, but the numbers are as reported.
I don’t know what will happen in 10 years. At some point US applicants are supposed to fall off, but maybe US universities will scrounge up more foreign applicants to compensate. Or more than compensate.
Also note that if you transfer in to NYU to Arts and Sciences, Poly etc. you cannot do an internal transfer to Stern.
