I am not sure about how Duke does it, but when I worked as an admission counselor we always made arrangements for visitors to stay in dorm rooms with student host. The host, were just that host, so they let the visitors tag along with them as they did their regular routine (go to club meetings, go to events, eat in the cafe, etc.). At least for the institution I worked for we covered certain expenses that were campus related.

Hope that helps.

I don't know about other places, but around this time of year, Stanford will set up any prospective student who wants to visit with a host. The visitor stays in the dorm with their host, usually sleeping on the floor or a couch.

When my D stayed over at Legacy Weekend at my alma mater last fall, she was paired with another Legacy (a senior, whose Dad I actually know) and she slept on the couch in her apt.
