My D has an alumni interview this afternoon and we were wondering if anyone knows what type of questions they may ask? Also, should she bring her resume? She says no - husband says yes. I don’t really know. Thanks!
@ACollegeFan from my own experience & what I’ve heard in the past, Pomona interviews (with an alumni or an admissions officer) are very laid-back, meaning they most likely won’t bombard her with tricky questions.
expect the usual “tell me about yourself,” at the very beginning, and then the interviewer will elaborate on specific parts of her answer. then everything else should just flow, but she should definitely know what she wants to talk about/what she wants the interviewer to know about her, whether thats leadership skills, a hobby not well portrayed on her application, etc. then find appropriate ways to weave in those certain aspects into the convo.
other questions might be strengths/weaknesses, what she does outside of school, why she wants to attend Pomona, etc.
a lot of people also say that interviews flow better if the student and alumni are able to connect or relate about something, so if she ever sees the chance, tell her to not be afraid to take it by agreeing or elaborating.
also an important thing is to have questions for the interviewer. the last question is guaranteed to be, “now, do you have any questions for me?” so make sure that she prepares questions that are insightful and can’t necessarily be answered by going on the Pomona website’s homepage. since it’s an alumni, it might be good to ask him/her what made them choose Pomona, their overall experience, what they would have done differently, etc.
as for the resume, it’s not required nor necessary, but it won’t hurt to bring it. I didn’t bring mine to my interview and he didn’t say anything or even ask about my grades/transcript.
Hope she was able to be herself. My daughter found that to be the best guidance.
She said it was a success! Thank you for the advice. Very helpful.
