Dear all,

I am a US citizen (Green card holder) but I have been living outside US for most of my life. If I am going UCSC next year, will I be able to apply to any types of loan, let say Stafford loans?

Thank you

Dear all,

I am a US citizen (Green card holder) but I have been living outside US for most of my life. If I am going UCSC next year, will I be able to apply to any types of loan, let say Stafford loans?

Thank you

Are you a citizen or a green card holder?

If you really are either of the above, you can get a Direct Loan of $5500 by completing the FAFSA with your parents.

But both my parents are not US cityzen, will this affect my application of direct loan?

You can file FAFSA as a US citizen. You need to contact them to get instructions on how to complete the form for your non citizen parents. You are not likely to get state residence or in state tuition for any of the state schools, but you are eligible for any of the aid and merit awards for US students. Your applications will be treated as that of a US citizen because you are.

But bear in mind that the only entitlements US citizens have are the PELL grants if family income/assets are low enough and to borrow $5500/6500/7500/7500 in Direct loans in four years. Your parents cannot complete PLUS as they are NOT US citizens.

If you are a green card holder, there is a requirement that you have to stay in USA for 6 months every year. Otherwise, you lose your green card.

^^That is not true at all.

Is there a residency requirement for maintaining permanent resident status? I thought there was. What is it?

Ok, my mistake. I guessed things changed.

The requirements are

<a href=“Maintaining Permanent Residence | USCIS”>http://www.uscis.gov/green-card/after-green-card-granted/maintaining-permanent-residence

Not quite. See <a href=“Maintaining Permanent Residence | USCIS”>http://www.uscis.gov/green-card/after-green-card-granted/maintaining-permanent-residence

I thought the 6 months thing is when you do not have reentry permit. I could be wrong.

well, i was born in USA. So that’s why I have my US passport, but i guess that won’t effect my application of the loan right?

Will the student be entitled to take out the extra $4k in federal loans that are offered to students whose parents apply for Plus loans and are rejected?

That appears to be in question, Mathmomvt. The student can ask the fin aid officer about that option. The parents cannot be turned down for PLUS as they are not permitted to even apply for it.
