how does being TAP certified give you an advantage in admissions to UCLA if you aren't certified when you turn in your application?

you get certification during your last spring...

You'll fill out some information later with more updated grades and planned courses, and your school will TAP certify you and then send the whole thing in.

Then, if you drop/fail any of those classes, you haven't fulfilled the expectations for admission, and they can rescind it.

bumbumbum: Tap cert. is big in the admissions process for UCLA if applying to an impacted major. However, I would rec completing it if you can maintain a good overall gpa in any major. If you're wondering how strongly it is weighed, here's a scenario that occured more than once in the last admissions roll.

Student A:
3.60 GPA
Business econ major
Tap cert.
Pre reqs done
IGETC done
Good ECs
Good Essay
Accepted

Student B
3.95 GPA
Business Econ major
No Tap
Pre reqs done
IGETC done
Great Ecs
Good essay
Rejected

I'm not exaggerating. Check the UC official transfer thread

NPN- that must suck for "Student B" w/ 3.95 GPA...
I have 3.708.... now im afraid.... but soc major.. I heard it's "impacted" also so... and I won't have TAP...

Just apply into a less impacted major if you're that worried about getting in. You'll switch later.

calrussian- r u going to do that?

Be careful about intending to switch majors. i dont' know what the rules are at UCLA, but I know that at Berkeley whatever major they had accepted you in, you are stuck there.

mobile- u sure? I don't think im going to do that because i won't finish my pre-req for other majors.

mobilemayhem: NOT TRUE. Whatever major you're accepted to mostly doesn't matter because all who get accepted is considered UNDECLARED until they actually declare a major. At least that's how it works in the college of L&S.

What if my school does not have TAP...will UCLA consider that? I went as far as considering to transfer to SFCC but the commute would have KILLED me. I hope PTK makes up for it....what do you guys think?

If your school doesn't have TAP(honors) go to different CC. They should have it!

If you're planning to deceive the admissions process by applying to one major with the intent to major in another, things could get messy. Do the research, its a great idea. However, some majors such as economics and psych will not allow someone who transferred outside of the department into it. If you're thinking about doing economics and switching to bizecon, no biggy, same department and very close in prereq requirements.

If the school you go to does not have tap, go somewhere that has it only if UCLA is your target school. During the last admissions roll for fall 07, a forum member, heavymetalgod, was rejected from UCLA's economics program without tap but admitted to UC Berkeley from De Anza(i believe) with a 3.77.

TAP IS ESSENTIAL FOR UCLA ADMITTANCE TO AN IMPACTED MAJOR!

I wish i finish doing TAP but too much of extra classes..

hw323: That's interesting. A counselor from Berekeley came to my CC and told us all that they have certain quotas of seats that they need to fill in each college/major and that they expect you to stay in the major they have accepted you in because it offsets their balance.

sorry but that's really easy for you to say considering you live in torrance. I'm in san ramon and the nearest cc w/ an honors program is san francisco i.e. 45 mins away.....

begum088- what is your major? GPA? Is UCLA your first choice?

applying as a Neuroscience major (I was thinking about applying as an anthropology major just because it is a less impacted major and it has all the pre-reqs for a bio majorg, but I'm unsure as to whether or not they will allow later entry into the NS major). GPA as of now 3.7. Charter President Phi Theta Kappa. Volunteer at UCSF Medical Center Emergency Dept. (6 month program which I'm planning to cont. until transferring so that will be more than 250 hours). IGETC will be completed. Major prep will be completed w/ the recommended 2 sem. of O-Chem & 1st sem. Physics.

What do you think =/ I hope you didn't take offense to what I said above. I know the LA area b/c I used to live there until 2 years ago and I know the abundance of CC's w/ the TAP program. Getting to and from SF from the East Bay is a tiring task...and with classes like chem and bio the commute would just kill.

begum- are you trying to go for medical school? the classes seems like it!
I think you should apply as anthropology major! less impacted!
I am sure you could get in w/ out TAP for anthropology and try changing it after you trasfer there! if not, stick with it! So don't worry about TAP anymore! I am not going to finish TAP even my school has honors program...

I used to drive 45minutes everyday. But the second nearest CC was 1 hour away. Its really not that bad.

Another note. a 3.7 in a science is exceptional. With those ecs, you're a shoe in for UCLA. I don't think you should be worried at --ALL--. Just maintain your grades and do everything just as you have. Consider yourself accepted.

You're in a high unit major, chances are many students will not be tap certified. Why? because people focus on the major prep rather than the general ed courses. Science/engineering aren't required to complete IGETC prior to transfer. So you're way ahead of the pack!!!

Apply to a couple privates(ie ivies that you have dreamt of going to).
