Question about teacher recommendations/Common App

In the Recommenders/FERPA section of the Common App for one of my schools, it says "Your school is using Naviance eDocs for transcripts, school reports, and teacher recommendations. Please contact your counselor directly and they will provide instructions specific to your school regarding these documents. Once your teachers submit their recommendations online you will see the status below. If your teacher(s) wish to submit forms via mail, you can download printable forms that can be completed on paper and mailed to each institution to which you apply."

As of right now, there is still a yellow dot next to teacher recommendations, but I can submit the Application portion if I want to. Does this mean the teacher recs are due at a later time or what?

Submit your application. You should have entered the email addresses for the teachers who will be sending letters of recommendation as part of the application process. Once your application is submitted, your school and the teachers will be notified of what items they need to send. If you are not entering their email address, then you will be able to print hard copies of the form to give to those teachers.

From the Common App site:
The teacher and counselor recommendation process is to be completed either all online or all offline. The college admissions offices do not want to receive the forms online and then receive paper evaluations and transcripts on paper. If there is a part of the online process that the counselor or teacher is unable to complete, the only choice is for the counselor or teacher to opt out and complete the forms on paper.

You may still complete and submit your application online, even if your counselor or teacher chooses to submit offline.

If your counselor or teacher has questions about the Recommendation system or the opt-out process, please have them contact us through the Recommendation Support Center.

If your counselor or teacher prefers to complete the forms offline, you may leave the email address blank when adding the recommender within your application. Once you do so, you will be able to print the recommendation form through the link provided in the application. Please print the form and provide it to your recommender.

@doresearch‌ There is nowhere for me to put my teacher’s e-mails. But I’m doing ED and the application is due in 2 days. Does this mean the teacher recs can be submitted at a later date or what?

I had to use Common App (with Naviance) so I can help you.

Since you got the “Your school is using Naviance…” message, you don’t have to put emails. What doresearch told you only applies to people who AREN’T using Naviance. So, your teacher will do everything via Naviance, and submit the recommendations when they are done. They will show up immediately on Common App (under Recommenders/FERPA) when they submit it.

On Common App, under Recommenders/FERPA, you should be able to see who submit their recommendations and when. When you have the required recommendations, the yellow dot should turn into a green check.

And as for your second question, YES, you should go ahead and submit the application. At least the school will have that part of your application. However, your teachers must get the recs in by the ED deadline (which is in two days, for you).

But I will say, the fact that your deadline is in 2 days and you still have the yellow dot is kinda concerning. You should really make sure your teachers get the materials in by the deadline. I know some schools may be a bit more lenient with their deadlines, but, yeah. Hope this helps, and good luck!

@miopyon13‌ What if they don’t get it in by the ED deadline? One of my teachers said she has already completed it but has yet to submit it. I don’t know about the other teacher’s situation, I assumed she knew. What if the other teacher hasn’t even started the letter yet? I’m freaking out a little about this. I’m applying ED to Cornell by the way.

Ok, go talk to both of your teachers. Make sure that the teacher who completed it (but hasn’t uploaded) submits it on Common App. The recs will show up immediately on Common App, so you’ll know if they submit it (or not). Remind her that your deadline is VERY soon and you need their recommendation on Common App.

And two, for the teacher you are unsure of, seriously, go talk to that teacher. Maybe send them an email now, and go talk to them tomorrow? Ask them if they’ve written the rec (mention that it’s not showing up on Common App) and stress that you need to recs in ASAP. Remind them that the deadline is in 2 days.

By the way, are two recommendations required for those schools? Or are you just choosing to send two in? If you’re sending in two (and they only require 1, or none) then I think you’re ok. If the school does require two, then consider calling the admissions office or talking to your counselor. As I said earlier, some schools are more lenient with the deadlines than others; I’ve heard of cases where the admissions office took the recommendations even a week after the deadline (if the other required materials were sent in before the deadline). But it depends on the school, so you need to look into it.

@miopyon13‌ Two recommendations are required, yes. I unfortunately can’t find any information regarding Cornell’s policy on that. But does the system just reject my application if my recs aren’t in on time?

I found a post from their admissions blog (but it was from 2011, so it may be outdated): https://blogs.cornell.edu/admissions/2011/10/31/application-questions-and-answers/</a></p>

According to this, they will contact you if you don’t get the 2 recommendations in. From what I’ve found, it seems like as long as they eventually get it (not too late, though), it will be okay, as long as your application and other materials are in (Application, Transcript, etc). Submit your application (if you haven’t already).

Keep talking to your teachers and emailing them. The one who finished the recommendation should be able to submit it. But you seriously need to talk to the other teacher, it is possible that they forgot. It is possible for teachers to write & submit excellent recommendations within a few hours, or even under an hour.

I’m not sure about Cornell, they may not reject your application immediately (they may just defer you to the regular pool if the materials aren’t there by a reasonable date). If it’s just the teacher recommendations, they may be willing to accept them a bit late.

@miopyon13‌ Thanks for the info, really

The one who finished submitted it, and the other one said it was no problem to submit it by this week or before the weekend.

How far is the “reasonable date” though? And when would they contact you if you don’t get them in? And are your chances affected if your materials are submitted late? Because I’ve read that your chances might decrease if you’re a bit sloppy with deadlines.

No problem! And sorry for the late response.

Reasonable would be like a week or so. Maybe two weeks, but that would really be pushing it.
And I’m assuming mid-Novemberish? Or whenever they get around to reviewing your admission.
Sorry, I’m not too sure about the last question. It really depends on the school. It seems that schools care that your application comes in on time, even if the other materials don’t. If I find more info, I’ll let you know!

edit I’ve done some searching around, and from what I’ve collected, it’s most important that your application through Common App was sent in on time. Since things such as late transcripts or late teacher recommendations may be the fault of the school and not the student, they are more lenient. However, it is possible that they may bump you to RD if the recommendation comes in way too late (like over a month past the deadline). Hopefully, your other teacher will send the recommendation ASAP!

Actually, you should check your Common App account. Under “Teacher Recommendations and FERPA”, under the both of your teacher recommendations, does it say “Teacher Evaluation… Submitted” or “Teacher Evaluation… Downloaded” for both of them? If it says “downloaded” (for both), then you’re fine. That means the school has actually downloaded the recommendations and the file is there for review.

@miopyon13‌ No worries. Thanks for all the info, both my teachers have submitted the letters and both say “downloaded”

Glad to hear that everything worked out! :)

I’m curious - one school has one required recommendation, but the other one is optional (and separate) and it looks like the teacher is supposed to be invited through the CA, not through Naviance, despite the other one having been entered succesfully (and downloaded) through Naviance.

Does that make sense? Does my son actually have to email a teacher who did a Naviance recommendation separately?

@rhandco‌ Are you referring to the “Other Recommender” section? If you are, then yes, you’re expected to enter their teacher’s info and Common App will send the invite to write the recommendation.

I think they make you send the invite separately because some recommenders cannot use Naviance to do the recommendations (for example, an employer won’t be able to use Naviance). Your son will need to add the other recommender to each school (via Common App) that he wants to recommendation sent to. Hope this helps!
