Question about the Common App essay vs the JHU supplement?

From a numbers point of view, it looks like I’m a slacker. My grades are very average but I have a reason. It’s a very personal matter that took up a LOT of time and effort. Not to oversell myself, but it has been quite traumatic for me seeing as I could barely sleep most nights.Something I will definitely not share on this forum, but am willing to share to JHU.

My question is should I write about this in the supplement or the common app essay?

The supplement question doesn’t really look like the place to talk about what happened during my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year of high school. IN fact, this personal matter is still on going. However, I’ve been trying tremendously to bring my grades up, despite my situation. I realize I barely have any time left to make a dent.

I want to show the school I’m trying to make an effort to bring my grades up, while still fighting an uphill battle with my personal situation.

There’s an additional information section on the common app where you can talk about things that don’t really fit in with your application (such as discrepancies in your grades and things like that).

Oh. I feel stupid. I never noticed that section before. I seriously appreciate it thank you.
