Question about the Honors Program

I just went on a tour of OSU the other day, and I asked my tour guide if it’s possible to be a part of the Honors Program as a freshman. She said it is (she herself is an honors student). However, when I checked the FAQ on the OSU website, it gives me this:

*Can I be in both the Honors Program and the Scholars Program?

You cannot initially enroll in both programs as an incoming freshman. As an incoming first year student, you submit an application for admission that allows you to be considered for the Honors Program and all 14 Scholars Programs. Please note that you can only join the Scholars Program as an incoming freshman. However, the Honors Program accepts transfer students as well as currently enrolled Ohio State students. Therefore, Scholars students who meet Honors Program criteria after being on campus for at least 1 semester may apply to the Honors Program directly through their college of enrollment. *

Pardon me, but what the hell? I have very little interest in the scholars program. The main idea of my wanting to get into the honors program is to have smaller class sizes… Is this policy something new? Because I always thought that incoming freshman could be in the honors program…

You definitely can be in the Honors as a freshman-my son is right now. I think they are saying you can only join the Scholars program as a freshman but you can join Honors any year.

Ohh… That makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up for me, haha.

One more question: Can I get into the honors program? I heard it used to be a 30+ ACT and top 10% of your class. I have a 31, but I’m about 2-3 people away from being in the top 10%… (I’m around 11-12%. I’m in an unusually competitive class at my school).

This year, you need to apply to be in the Honors program. (Last year, the Honors program was by invitation, but this year, you must apply.) The priority deadline for the Honors application is not very far away, December 15. And you need to have your application for admission in by December 1, too, to be considered for the full range of scholarships (and you appear to be qualified for some merit scholarships).

Last year when we attended the Honors and Scholars weekend, we were told the top 10% guideline was not set in stone. They take into account other factors, such as how competitive your high school is.
