As a student who wants to pursue a career dealing with French, do you get a lot of exposure to French? Is the campus around parts that speak French? Sorry for my lack of knowledge, I’m not exactly how sure how much of N.O. still speaks French or if it is very common to hear. Any insight?
I grew up in New Orleans & went to Tulane Law School. So I can say that New Orleans has French heritage but not many people you come across speak French in public (and most do not in their homes either). You’d do better going to towns in Southeast LA - e.g. Lafayette for that. Hope this helps a little
French has pretty much died out even in the bayous and other rural towns. You will no longer hear it even if you travel around the state, unless you happen upon some Haitian immigrants that have settled there. The closest you will come is some Cajun which still has some French words mixed in, but really not even then. But the French major at Tulane is extremely strong, the school and city have an especially close relationship with France, and there are many historical documents in French, should you ever decide to do a research paper or project that involves them.
@CA1543 @fallenchemist okay thank you!!
Based on the years I lived in New Orleans, it’s probably safe to say that many French words are mangled in translation as part of the current vernacular.
But the most important French words you will hear in NOLA may be these: “Laissez les bon temps roulez!” :">

Jeff actually wrote a blog post about this haha. He’s been so spot on lately, it makes me wonder if he reads CC.
He does. He has an ID on here.
From time to time
You added a picture! @TulaneJeff
My son is a French Major at Tulane (1st Semester Junior) and loves it. They still offer a couple of classes in French Creole as well. He’ll be going to France for the Spring semester next year. The French Department faculty are all wonderful and my kiddo is really enjoying it.
It is definitely one of the many strong departments at Tulane, but you have to put it towards the top from all the feedback I get.
