My #1 school right now is UT Austin, and I know that I either want to major in Journalism or something in the Business school (probably Finance, but I'm not sure). Business is my first choice since it is so difficult to find jobs in journalism these days (I don't want to set myself up for bankruptcy), but obviously McCombs is extremely difficult to get into. My question is, how much easier is it to get into the Journalism program than it is to get into McCombs? I am not an automatic admit to the university, so I want to make sure that I can get into one of the majors I apply for. I go to an extremely competitive school and am in the top 11% of my class and I have a 2090 SAT (610 CR, 700 M, 780 W) score. Is journalism a safe backup major to apply for or do I need to pick something less competitive to ensure I can get in? Thanks.

See last year’s scores:

Thanks, I saw that. I realize that my SAT score is higher than all of the averages, but I also know that the average class rank in the business school is about 5.7%, and I know UT places a huge emphasis on class rank. UT does know that the school I go to is extremely competitive, so hopefully they will take that into consideration. I can’t find the average class rank for the College of Communications, so I am just wondering if it’s a safe bet or not to get into the journalism program.

Getting into to UT will be a challenge and business even more so. You get to list 2 majors so put business and then journalism. Hopefully you will get one or at least UGS.

Your SAT and class rank are decent and if your school is a challenging school then you have a shot.

So, I know that you list your top 2 majors, but even if you don’t get accepted into those you could still get accepted for Undergraduate Studies? I just want to confirm that’s what you’re saying. I don’t really understand if UGS is considered a separate major that you have to apply for, or if it’s just where you get put if you’re not accepted into either major but still accepted into the university. Thanks for the help!

You can choose to put UGS but you’re right it’s not a major, just a catchall of undecideds + those who didn’t get either major but was admitted.

I think you can play the odds by picking a major that is less competitive to get admitted and plan on applying to McCombs later. Your UT gpa will then be the determining factor but again, it’s a pretty competitive internal transfer.

Thanks, yes I have heard of that! I know that many people apply to Education thinking that they will transfer later… But can anyone explain to me why this is necessary when UGS has a lower average SAT score? I would think that you can just apply to your top choice majors, and if you don’t get in then UGS would be a better bet than Education. Maybe there is more to it than I am understanding and the lower SAT score does not mean it’s easier to get into. I don’t know, just wondering if anyone knows the answer.

I do want to get into UT, but I don’t want to have to put Education as a backup major unless it’s necessary.
