Question about Weighting

Next year my school will begin to run IB classes for those going for the diploma program, and also for those aren't. My question is, how does your school go about weighting for the IB HL and SL classes? The school board has decided to weight both HL and SL classes the same way AP classes are weighted, so I was wondering how other districts go about this.

Most schools that have IB programs do that. For that matter, I can’t say I’ve heard of a school where AP and IB aren’t weighted equally, although they may exist.

My D has attended two different high schools and both offered IB. The first school weighted honors courses one way, and AP and IB were equal to each other, but at a higher level than honors.

The 2nd school weights all three classes (honors, AP and IB) the same way! Huh!? (I’ll add that their weighting is also much lower than the first school).

The weighting allows the school to, by their standards, compare apples to apples when they rank students. But many colleges strip the weight and re-weigh according to their own “secret formula” anyway.

So, the consensus seems to be that standard level and higher level IB courses are weighted equally?

Yes, all IB courses are weighted equally everywhere I’ve heard of.

In my district, one extra point is awarded for honors, two for AP, and THREE (!!!) for IB. LUNACY!
