Question concerning foreign language placement

I realize that placement for languages can be somewhat nebulous, especially considering that AP tests are not used to determine placement. Can anyone (preferably from personal experience) give me an idea of where I might place on UCR's exam knowing that I scored a 5 on the AP Spanish Language exam?

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

I would assume you would do fairly well place out of of at least Spanish 1 and into either Spanish 2/3. However, all of the Spanish (and any other language) placement tests ask different questions and vary in time. It all depends on how you fill out the questionnaire at the beginning of the exam.

I took 4 years of HS Spanish and passed the AP Language exam with a 3. When I took my placement test, I answered at least 40 questions (lasting about 20-25 minutes) and I still placed into Spanish 1, which sucks but I can at least have an easy A with the class.

Once you start your class, check with your instructor during his/her office hour. I actually lucked out, got placed into a basic Mandarin class, after turning in our 1st homework assignment the professor told me to see her in her office that afternoon. I’m not sure if all professors can do this or if they are still doing this (I graduated almost 10 years ago…when UCs were “affordable”)

She spoke to me in mandarin and found out that I was a fluent Cantonese (different speaking dialect/same when written) speaker, I can read a lot of Chinese but don’t remember enough to write without assistance (basically I have ah-ha moments, I see the characters for a second and can write perfectly).

Anyway, she pulled out a form, filled it out and told me that she gave me full credit for 3 quarters of Mandarin and that it would be a waste of time for me to take these classes. I turned the form into the registrar’s office and had the easiest quarter ever.
