soovievt directed me over here from the MT thread. She said you have a d who goes to Northern Colorado University in theater. Our d is considering that school as one of her choices to audition at next year (for MT). Do you have any info/experiences you can share with me? The school has not been brought up in anyone's postings on the other thread. I would just like to know more about it. My d has several friends who have gone there or will be going there, but she doesn't hear much from them to get a taste of what it is like.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Jennysg: Yes, my D is a soph. in UNC's theater program. I don't know why UNC isn't discussed more on CC. It is seldom mentioned, I suppose because it is not in the same league as most of the colleges discussed here. I did post recently for a mom whose son is considering their music dept.

The MT program is a BA program, as is the straight theater major. It is VERY competitive, just like all the other programs. I think they take a class of 16 each year. The theater performance major takes 20. (There is also a theater education major.) There is a dance major at UNC so students can take dance classes with those majors.

The MT students can audition for the regular plays and are often cast in them. Right now they are doing Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and the girl who has the lead is a MT major. They do two musicals per year. My D has had mixed reviews of the musicals she has seen so far, and she did MT in high school. She will often say that some of the leads were good, but overall I don't think she thought the performances were stellar.

The MT graduates did have a showcase in NYC this spring, and my D said one of the guy graduates has signed to play one of the leads in the anniversary tour of Cats. I think several other graduates are working in MT successfully.

At first, my D didn't like UNC. It's a smaller town than she is used to, not so much to do on campus, but now she really likes it. The regular theater productions are absolutely stellar, so your D would receive good training in acting. I have seen three plays there and they were all wonderful.

I see from your post that you are from Phoenix, and my D has mentioned several kids from there in her program. Some of them leave because they don't like the weather! (Down jacket, hats, mittens, boots, long underwear or tights under jeans in winter--would your D adjust OK to that?)

UNC is much more affordable than some of the other colleges for MT. They now have a $5,000 scholarship for students from any state with good grades.

What else would you like to know?

I'm so glad you guys connected :D
Susan

Wow!! what service!
Again thanks soozievt. I have posted this question several times over the past 2 years. I figured I would eventually connect with someone who knew about the program.

Thanks for the quick reply. We don't have too many ??'s yet. Our D knows about the program only through theater friends who have applied/go/went there(but none are close friends so we can't really talk to them..and we don't really have a way to connect up). She is aware that it is a BA. She prefers the BFA route but wants to look into the school anyway.
I think (from what I have heard from others) that neighboring states get an instate rate. Of course, I haven't checked this out yet and I could be way wrong. As for the cold, she has schools from all over on her list. We (mom and dad) have mentioned the cold...we are natives of Phx..so far she seems ok with it but she hasn't had to live in it yet!
I would love to continue to chat with you as things come up. Our D is a jr so we are just beginning the process. Is this the best place to keep in touch with you?
Jenny

Jennysq: I sent you an email, so we can talk more if you like. You can email me later with questions.

You can call the theater dept. also--everyone at UNC has been very nice to deal with so far. I forgot to mention that the MT majors have private voice lessons with music faculty members and there are nice facilities for a smaller state school: practice rooms with adjustable acoustics! UNC is the college for the arts in CO, apparently their music dept. is well-known in the area. You can't go to UNC for anything but the education though--the town and the college campus are not exciting.

There used to be a scholarship arrangement at UNC called the Western Undergraduate Exchange, which is several Western states cooperating on tuition for top students at state colleges (not all states and not all colleges, either). My D has this, which is tuition set at 150% of in-state tuition. Now they have stopped this, at least that is what I gather from their website, and are offering the $5,000 scholarship for top students from any state. That would be good news for a student from AZ.
