Question for Current Yale Students on Financial Aid

My D is making the final decision between Y and P. I am not getting a clear picture on the Finaid for Yale.

I know that a student can use outside scholarships to cover work study and summer earnings. If a student does this but still wants to work to offset the Family contribution how much can they work before it affects the Yale grant?

From what I can tell 3,000 is protected. After that what is the percentage

of student income that will be used to replace the Yale grant?

What is the percentage of student assets used to replace the Yale grant?

From what I can tell it is 50% of student income, is it also 50% of assets?

Can current Yale students, Yale Parents or Adcoms with knowledge of the finaid formula please pm me?

The best person to ask is the finaid office themselves. Give them a call tomorrow and have them clarify - they are used to getting questions like this, and speaking for my own experiences, I've found them to be extremely patient and helpful people.

Also, did you check out Yale University SFAS: Financial Aid > Newly Admitted Students? I'd be surprised if this wasn't covered somewhere in the FAQs.

Yes, I have looked and called but never really got my questions answered. It doesn't matter anymore as D just accepted the offer of admission. We will deal with whatever happens at this point. D was leaning towards Yale all along and H and I just decided that a couple of thousand dollars shouldn't determine the decision. Go Bull Dogs!!!!

Yay singermom1! Did your D go to Bulldog Days? Mine got home late last night and can't stop talking about it.

"How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Paree?"

Riverrunner -

Where did your D stay? Mine hosted several girls in their suite (I hope it was cleaner than when I last saw it). I am so happy they had good weather.

One piece of shopping advice - mattress pad. Bought one for DD and her bed is the envy of the suite! In fact, fellow moms, I would be happy to talk about Yale specific room purchases if you are interested. PM me for info.

Hi work,

She stayed in "swing space" which didn't mean much to me. She's at school now, so can't ask specifics. She said the hosts were wonderful, but very busy between classes and helping with BDD. The prefrosh had no problem finding things to do. They toured the campus and New Haven, trained at the Yale Bowl complex, saw a number of theater and music performances, attended classes, and talked with current students about the many EC offerings.

A friend of hers stayed in Silliman, but I don't know the host's name.

Of course I'd love advice about things she'll need next year. We live FAR away so will be shipping some boxes to a local relative this summer. D is planning to do FOOT, so I'll send some stuff with her, and bring the rest when I come during move in. Any necessary things I could buy sooner and send would lighten our load later! Not sure when residence college assignments are made. Would it make more sense to talk about this once she knows exactly where she'll be living?

Thanks for your offer!

Any one know when a deposit is due and how much and what the payment plan is? Does everyone go to FOOT? When do the kids hear about roommates/freshman dorms/college assignments? BTW, I gave myself a tour at BDD dropoff that included the new Cross Campus library. The campus looks really great and was very alive and exciting with Commons packed for the opening dinner/ice cream social and with all the groups promoting themselves for BDD. The kids are going to have an awesome time, I'm sooo jealous. Riverrunner, glad you got some feedback on the visit, we didn't get much more than that ours "hung out", although we did finally hear that included a fraternity party and dancing at some club. I do know she was exhausted when she returned, but probably not from 8:00 classes.

Nickcc, did you get a recent mailing from Yale with information about how to respond to the acceptance offer, and filling out the housing questionaire? It also had a payment schedule. There is no housing deposit, but you will get two bills each year, one due August 1st and the other due December 1st. Other payment plans are outlined.

I think all info about FOOT is online at the admitted student website. I've heard from other kids at Yale that FOOT is not to be missed. It's a bit inconvenient because that means sending the kid out ahead, and then showing up for move in day, but looks like a great way to meet classmates.

I agree with the jealous comment. I'm sure Yale isn't right for most kids, but for the ones who fit, it's like coming home.

And yes, my d is exhausted. It's a minimum of 6 hours in the air for her. At least we know she will never do a 72 hour turnaround trip like this again. Next time she goes to New Haven, she'll get to stay a while.

riverrunner,

D visited Yale last summer and there was no turning back after that. I am glad to hear your D liked BDD. D did not go as we live pretty far away. She had already missed too much school to justify almost another week of missed classes. I think she will do the Foot program though. Her sister and I can come out a bit later with all the luggage etc...I sure hope there is good summer storage available!

Nickcc,

I think the first payment on the 10 month plan is due May 31

Mom of a sophomore here, and just wanted to say: welcome to Yale! FOOT is a marvelous program, and there are various levels of it, depending on how much of an outdoor person your child is. Mine is not too fond of camping, so she chose the shortest/easiest one, and had an absolutely glorious time.

A tip: if you haven't already, make reservations now for Parents' Weekend in October. Hotels fill up very quickly!

Thanks, booklady. Another parent mentioned the October crush, back in January, and hotels were already tight then. FOOT sounds great...one of my D's friends who will be a soph is going to be a trip leader and couldn't say enought good things about the program...
