How difficult would it be, as a new lower, to take 6 academic courses, play in two bands and take lessons on an instrument, play lacrosse in the spring (im a guy if that makes any difference for lax), hopefully be in 1 or 2 clubs, and hopefully find time for community service?

Just putting this out there, I can stay up as late as i need to doing work, sleep really isn't ever an issue for me.

Mhm, I don’t think it would be too bad. All the lowers would still be trying to adapt to the new school system.

I, too, am planning on taking six academic courses next year, one music ensemble, at least one lesson, a sport (hopefully) and at least 3 clubs.

For community service, Exeter has many clubs dedicated to community service and they’re usually fun. :)

yeah hopefully for me it won’t take too long to adapt and I think lacrosse might not really be a factor because by the time spring rolls around i’ll definitely be fully adapted to the new system

I don’t think I really answered your question, I’m sorry. xD haha

Whether you do well or not, would probably depend on how well you manage your time and how committed you are to your work. Also, if you really want to excel at Exeter, you’ll have a lot of determination and motivation and that should keep you moving. :)

It depends on what classes you take and/or what bands you play in. If you’re playing in the chamber orchestra, it’s impossible to take six academic classes (you would have -1 or -2 free period haha, it won’t fit into the schedule). Music ensembles also usually practice at the same time, so it really depends on what you plan on taking. Lacrosse should not be an issue - I know many people who do sports and music. Club meetings, again, depend on which ones you join - some meet multiple times a week, others twice a term. Community service isn’t that hard to fit in - most of the school does it.

Honestly, it all depends on which classes you decided to take, and which clubs/ensembles you want to join. Just remember, you don’t want to get overworked. A day with a sports game, orchestra rehearsal, and a full class day can get tiring on four hours of sleep.

i know but say i get back at 8 every day and have 0 frees all week, that gives me a good 4 or 5 hours for work and i still would get around 7 hours of sleep. Also, does the chamber orchestra take up free periods as well as those practices from 6-8 (don’t know what they’re called)?

But obviously ill talk to the dean of students or whoever is in charge of scheduling before school starts to see if it would work out but i feel like if i have from 8-whenever i go to bed to do work, i can get 6 classes of work done every night.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure 6 academic classes is manageable if you don’t get a bedtime
I’m sure there are people who have done it.
Chamber Orchestra takes up a class format during the day, so the maximum number of classes you could take would be Chamber Orchestra and five academic classes, or six academic classes.

oh, and you said chamber orchestra was like the highest level group right?

ok, and sorry im not trying to prove you wrong or anything but on the Exeter website the example schedule, http://exeter.edu/documents/DS_Schedule.pdf has 8 letters/blocks that go for either 50 minutes or and hour and 15 minutes, are these academic classes (or spots for chamber orchestra)? Because in that case wouldn’t it be possible.

Again, not trying to prove u wrong, just curious

Sports/PE/drama sports take up two blocks…

ooo, totally forgot about sports. srry i feel like im kinda ****ing u off now…

It’s really fine. It’s late
haha

o, i just noticed, chamber orchestra is for woodwinds and strings, no wonder u dont hav any trombones. I guess i can take 6 academic courses :-)

Well, we have a french horn in Chamber, so I guess they would take trombones?
Oh, we don’t have any trombone players in general haha, at least not in Symphony or Chamber.
Chamber and any other orchestra IS optional, so you could take six academic classes if you wanted to anyways :)

yea i guess they would, but i think music for me would take priority over a 6th academic course

I think the number of available scheduling blocks may be a bit misleading. For example my son has one class that is G block as well as Y block on Wednesday so that the class can meet 5 days a week. He also has AT, BU, and CV block classes. One class (H) meets 4 days a week. He is a prep, and has health class 2 days a week. Also plays a JV sport. All in, he has 4 blank blocks available during the week. Think it would be near impossible to fit in a 6th class in addition to music and a JV sport. You can ask PETeacher who is available on a separate thread, but I got the strong impression that they discouraged students from trying to take 6 courses. If you are feeling under challenged in 5 courses, I believe they would be more inclined to put you into higher level courses rather than adding a sixth to your schedule. I would also caution you about underestimating the academic challenge at Exeter. My son was a top student in his middle school. He has done very well at Exeter, but it has been very very challenging – everything we hoped it would be.

Does Exeter not having AP classes put the students at a disadvantage?

From the Exeter school profile for colleges, in May 2009, 204 students took 343 AP Exams in 31 subjects. 58% scored 5, 27% scored 4, 11% scored 3, 3% scored 2. Doesn’t look like they are disadvantaged by a lack of courses formally designated as “AP classes”.
