Hi, I'm a prospective transfer to UVA (class of 2015), and I just wondered if there is anyone out there who has already transferred from a small liberal arts college to a larger university that can give me their perspective on what the transition was like. I haven't totally decided whether or not I'm going to stay at my current college. I love the academics, although I'm frustrated that the classes are sometimes limited, or certain things are only offered during certain semesters. I've made a lot of good friends, but there seems to be this vibe of overall apathy on campus, and a lot of people seem to have a love/hate relationship with the school. I really want to be somewhere where there's more political diversity, and where people are having a good academic experience but also seem to have some pride in their school. I'm not exactly getting the traditional "college" experience where I am, and I guess I want to know if it's worth transferring for. However, I want to take some science classes next year, and I'm a little concerned that I will get lost in the crowd in those classes at a larger university (I'm not a science major, but I'm considering premed and want to test a few classes out to see if it's a direction I want to go in).

If there's anyone who specifically came from a single-sex school to a coed one who can give me an idea of what it was like, that would be great :) There are aspects of the single-sex culture that I like, but I've found it to be kind of frustrating, too.

Hey! I transferred to UVA last year from community college, so I am familiar with adjusting to a much larger school. School pride is huge here, so if that’s important to you, UVA has it down pat. It was important to me to have the traditional college experience too, and I’ve enjoyed being able to go to football games and participate in UVA traditions.

I’m not in a science major so I can’t tell you much about those classes, but personally, I have had a lot of large lectures coupled with small (~20 student) discussion sections to review the material. You will probably not get the personal connection with your professor that you get at a smaller university unless you make an effort to go to office hours and meet with him/her.

Good luck, and feel free to pm me with any questions about transferring or UVA

Yes and no. I can always find people dressed to the 9s, but I haven’t felt any pressure to conform to that style. I think there are enough preppy students to give UVA the reputation, but there are plenty of other kinds of fashion and personality; people just tend to overlook those because they’re looking for the preppy ones.

I was definitely expecting a lot of rich trust fund kids when I got here, but UVA has a more diverse student population than I gave them credit for.

Thanks brishe If I’m not a partier (I’m pretty quiet/low-key. It’s not that I would never go to a party, I just prefer movie nights and casual hanging out to drunk frat parties), will I feel out of place?
