Question on switched community colleges.

Hey, I'm new to this site and was just curious about a few things. I went to El Camino College (CC) for 1 semester last year (Fall2008), but I did fairly bad (1B, 1Cs, 2F). I then switched to a Santa Monica College for my second semester, retaking the same classes from El Camino and did a whole lot better (4A's)

I always believed that my if I switched colleges the former transcript and GPA would not be taken into consideration when applying to universities but I've been told that's not the case.

How badly will that semester affect my ability to transfer? And has anyone been in a similar situation and applied to a university?

Your former transcript will most definitely be taken into consideration. You are obligated to report all grades from all post-secondary institutions.

Don’t worry though – what you need to do is talk to someone at SMC about transferring those classes to SMC from ECC so that you can do academic renewal on them. If the classes that you re-took are equivalent, then you can do academic renewal on the 2 Fs. Unfortunately, the C and B will have to stick with you.

If you’re applying to the UCs, you should be fine, but if you go for USC, they won’t honor academic renewal, and you will have to live with those two Fs on your transcript/GPA.

close… it’s not ‘academic renewal’… just a simple grade replacement. you fill out one form, and, like grey said, if the classes are considered equivalent, the A’s replace the F’s. Unfortunately, you took those other two classes over for no reason.

I wouldn’t worry about those first grades. That C is going to be a btch in the long run, dragging your GPA lower than you’d like, but it’s not insurmountable. I’m transferring to UCLA (philosophy) after having received 9 Ws 5 Fs, 1 D, 2 Cs.
