question on the "Student Budget"

I just got my final financial aid award in the mail.

The student budget, which encompasses the "antipated expenses", includes costs of books, Personal expenses and Travel. Since the sum of my total student contribution and parent contribution is less than $ of books+personal+travel, they are covered by my financial aid award.

How exactly does that work?
How do I use that FA award to pay for travel, books, and personal expenses? I mean these kinds of expenses do not sound like ones I can "charge" to the school.

You'll generally get a refund check or direct deposit transfer when your loans, grants, or what have you comes in.

Ok, I think i understand, and that makes sense. I just assumed that all grants would be directly given to the school's account.

Sorry, I wasn't quite clear. The loans and grants go to your student account, and then the school gives you the excess in the form of a check or a direct deposit. (;

Like, you have $12000 due to the school directly, and $3000 "other" education expenses that you're expected to pay for. If you get $14000 in loans/grants, that will go to the school, and they'll issue you a check for $2000. Obviously I'm completely making up numbers that don't apply to Stanford. (;

Thanks! you explained exactly what I had question on
