I'm currently a dual major in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics who just finished his first semester RPI. For a while now I've been interested in applying to another strong engineering school like Carnegie Mellon or Cornell. I was wondering what to expect of the competitiveness of transferring to other high ranking schools and when the best time to apply would be. My current college GPA is a 3.86/4 with a total of 41 credits (17 from this semester and 24 from AP Credits). Next semester I will be taking 20 more credits. In high school I had a weighted GPA of 4.04 (school never reported unweighted GPAs), but was rejected from the schools that I'm thinking about transferring to now. My SAT was 2190 (760 M, 680W, 750R), and I had decent extra-curriculars in high school, and now in college I do Crew (rowing) as a sport and a few other minor clubs and activities. Assuming I'm able to maintain my current GPA, if not raise it, would it be more advisable to try applying as a transfer candidate either during/after my sophomore year of college, or would two semesters (if I transfer after next semester) of college be adequate enough to be seen as a strong candidate?

wait question, my friend goes there right now and I’ve visted the school and I’m just wondering why you would leave a great school that is all about engineering to another school?

Please remember that those AP credits might not count for anything at another university. You need to check their websites for their specific policies. If you need all of those credits in order to graduate in the time frame you have in mind, you will need to plan your list of targets accordingly.
