Hello, I recently applied to various different schools with UCR being the one I would like to attend the most. I have a few questions and was wondering if anyone here knew the answer?
Exactly what kind of degree does UCR's "Sociology/Administrative Studies Major" give you.
I am still undecided on what I want my career to be however I am interested in HR management would this be a good major for me?
If I were decided on HR management as my career path what would be the best option for me due to the fact that I am receiving my associates in Sociology at the end of this semester?
I feel as if I messed up by not getting my associates in business administration then transferring. It’s mostly my fault I should have done research myself instead of listening to my counselors who probably didn’t really understand what I wanted.
P.S. I was planning on calling the school to find a lot of this out but I just thought I would check here first to see if anyone had any information since this forum is so big.
Thanks in advanced for anyone who is able to help me.
Looks like a joint major between sociology and business. There are BA and BS versions of this joint major; the BS version appears to require two additional sociology courses.
Yeah, I agree with @ucbalumnus - it looks like a joint sociology and general business/business administration major.
Yes, it sounds like it could be a good major for an HR management career, although you don’t really need any specific major to go into HR either way. There’s no real “best option”, but if this major interests you, it’s a good choice.
I would like to thank the two of you for your responses! Makes sense to me now. How are joint majors seen when trying to get a job? Is it better because of two concentrations or worse because of two and not concentrating on one?
@julliet Unless I am misinformed a HR Manager needs a bachelors in some concentration whether it be HR management, business, etc. ?
Nah, you don’t need to major in business. It can be helpful. But really what someone needs to be an HR manager is experience in HR. You can get a job in HR without having an HR degree, and then work your way up. Some companies may be more rigid about this, or expect you to get an MBA or a master’s in HR. But at most places, it’s not a requirement that you have majored in HR in undergrad. Most undergrads don’t even have an HR major.
@julliet Thanks for the information I have been trying to find some internships/volunteer work relating to the area. Ive use volunteermatch and jobs.ca.gov. But can not seem to find any way to get my foot in the field. Do you have any recommendations?
