I'm not sure why I didn't ask this last year, but whatever. I'll be entering my second year as an applied math major this fall, and my last "prep for major" course I have left is to choose between Physics 1C, Chem 20A, and Chem 20B. I know that with a 4/5 on the AP chem test, one can opt not to take 20A and instead start with 20B, but my question is that if I sign that waiver, will that get me out of that requirement all together, or would I then HAVE to take Chem 20B/Physics 1C? I figure since my major only requires one chem course that the AP credit can fill that last requirement, but not sure of the policy on that.
Thanks and have a good night.

Chem dept website does say AP Chem may give your chem20A credit. I wonder how come it did not give me Chem14A credit. If it did give you credit, it should appear on your DPR.

I’m pretty sure that you have to go into the Undergraduate Office and ask about getting credit/waiving Chemistry 20A. It does not automatically appear on your DPR.

Really? I did not go to the Undergraduate Office. I thought AP credits were given in orientation??? My other AP credits are on my DPR.

They don’t automatically give you Chem 20a/14a credit because medical schools do not accept AP scores as course equivalents, so if a student wanted to do pre-med courses, then they would have to take 20A if even if they got a 4 or 5 on AP.
Since I do not have to continue on in the series passed 20A nor do I have the slightest intention of going to med school, I’m hoping that I can just get exempt from that final prep for major course.

Your DPR will include “empty” units for passing the AP Chemistry exam, but it will not automatically waive you from taking 14A/20A. If you specifically want to get credit for 14A/20A, go see the office.

For thelonewanderer’s originally question, I don’t know if you still need an additional class.

Ah alright, well thanks anyway. I’ll just shoot the department an email tomorrow or another day. Just wanted to check here first so I don’t feel like I’m “wasting” their time.
