Question to current Vandy student about Asians on campus

I'm an Asian Indian from Arizona, and I plan on attending Vandy in the fall if I'm admitted. The thing I have to ask though, is how much of the student body is Asian Indian like me? According to Vandy statistics, the undergraduate population is only ~7% Asian. Of that 7%, how many are Indian?

are you like half asian and half indian??

Nope, I'm full Indian. They call that "Asian Indian" for some reason in this country. no idea why.

Perhaps because in Arizona people commonly use the word "Indian" to refer to Native American Indians.

so u are not asian....then u wouldn't qualify to be asian if your 100% indian....

Commodore 64, I have never seen a break-out of the Asian numbers, so I can't answer the question. However, the news release in January from the Dean of Admissions about the large increase in applications mentioned that there was a 29% increase in applications from "Asians".

Have you tried asking someone in Admissions this question directly? I bet they have some data.

I'm glad to hear you are planning to attend if you are admitted.

No no, I'm not Native American...I'm from India (the country in Asia right next to China)...so yes I "qualify" to be 100% Asian. Midmo, I haven't tried calling Admissions, maybe I should though; I applied ED2 but I'm very borderline so I have a strong feeling I might not get in. Nevertheless, can anyone at Vandy tell me about how many Indians (not Native Americans) they know of or have seen on campus?

Commodore64, as I mentioned above, I don't have numbers. I am not a student, my son is. I have been on campus about half a dozen times over the last year. For what it is worth, I saw a lot of Indian faces on campus and in the coffee shops near campus. It is entirely possible that many of those on campus are involved in the medical school campus in some way; med students, residents, researchers, or faculty. My son's adviser is Indian (IIT grad.), and perusing the faculty web sites should satisfy you that there are quite a few faculty members originally from India or from Indian families.

Truly, I don't think you should worry about being isolated. Have you looked for any Indian student organizations?

Wow, "ahhhhhh".. you have got to be one of the most ignorant posters I have seen on this forum. Indians ARE considered Asians. "Asian" doesn't mean "Chinese, Korean, Japanese" etc.

I may only go to Vanderbilt, but I'm pretty sure India is in Asia.
