Question!?!?

Ok... In high school I took Spanish for 3 years and got an "A"
in each class (spanish 1,2,3)

Now I just submitted my application to the UC's, and it looks like
I only have 55 transferrable units.... Would me taking the spanish
class in high school, also give me 5 extra units towards transfer??

Anyone? lol

Nope, not at all.

Unless you took AP Spanish and scored high on the AP exam with an AP score that would possibly transfer over to some UC’s depending on their AP score policy.

oh well nvm

So does that mean I’ll have to take it (to get the 5 extra units), even though I don’t “need” to. Cause I know if you took it in high school, you don’t need to take it again.

Well what did you score on the AP exam? I doubt it would get you 5 units anyways.

You need 60 transferable units to be eligible to transfer to a UC…so your best bet is to sign up for more classes that will fill up that extra 5 units…and since you already submitted your app maybe you should call all the campuses or whatever to get those 5 units added.

I dont know refer to a second opinion I guess.

Buuump…

To repeat my question:
I know UC’s don’t require you to take Spanish again if you already took 2 or 3 years
of it with a C or better. Does that mean they give you 5 units towards transferring??

Help! LOL

someone already answered ur question so iono y ur asking it again. the answer is NO! why would they give u any units?

He said “refer to a second opinion” so that’s what I’m doing.

But thats fine, this just means I’m gonna have to contact the schools, and take 1 more class this spring bummer

I hope you enjoy your time at Riverside

^^^ I don’t get it ^^

Who told you that? A counselor at my CC told me that there is a way to obtain high school credits FOR your IGETC (thereby increasing your unit count), by submitting a petition form to your CC’s IGETC/Counseling department.

This would make it so that you wouldn’t have to take certain classes (like Spanish) at the CC if you’ve already taken them in high school.

RyanGetzlaf, I think you should be fine–I have the same situation; I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and don’t plan on taking it at my CC.

OH great!

thx a lot, I’ll have to meet with my counselor this week!

You need to check with a counselor about this. Please make sure you understand the difference between subject credit and unit credit, however.

Just because you are able to opt out of a subject area on IGETC does not mean that you can reduce your unit count by that much. I.E.: I took Bio in High School and my CC offers a bio class that is three units so therefore I can deduct 3 units from my 6o unit minimum. That’s not necessarily how it works. Please check with a counselor about this type of technical stuff you are not sure about.

Usually unless you took AP courses, you can probably only get SUBJECT credit for taking spanish in HS. Meaning you won’t need to take a spanish class in CC but still need to get to 60 units.

BUT: Your best bet is to talk to a counselor at your school that is familiar with IGETC to get a good answer to this question!!

If after talking to a counselor you determine that you need to make changes to your UC app, please see this page: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/apply/afterapply.html

Thx alot “usdenick”

I spoke to my counselor this morning, and yes it turns out
I only received subject credit not unit credit.

Oh well. Looks like one more class next semester.
