I'm planning on attending SUNY Purchase this fall, but I live far away and have never been to the campus. Could someone tell me if it would be a good idea to have a car while living on campus? My parents are going to sell my car to help pay for tuition if I don't need it.
Thank you!!!

You will probably be able to be reasnably happy at Purchase without a car, but it wouldn’t hurt. The immediatley surrounding area is almost exclusively large esate homes and golf courses. There is almost nothing, except a few small restaurants, that you can walk to from the campus. The city of White Plains is about a ten minute car ride. You can get a bus there, or to the train station to catch a train into NYC. But the options are pretty musc: 1. stay on campus 2. go to White Plains 3. go to NYC or 4. go home. There are many students with cars, so you can catch rides with them and are not fully dependent on public transportation.

If you haven’t visited campus yet, you should be aware that it is aesthically challenged. The school website says the campus its the “anti-Ivy” or something similar. It has almost endless brown brick and is very “modern”. Although the exteriors of the buidlings are bland, their interiors are new, nice and have great light (ie the library). We just visited in February. There is ongoing work to add color and patterns to the huge spanses of brown brick. In the end, however, the quality of your education will not be defined by how pretty the outside of the buildings look or how the good sports teams are, or aren’t. (Sorry, I’m a parent).

Because of its strong music recording program and proximity to NYC (and very reasonable OOS cost), Purchase is among my son’s final choices. He’s still deciding. If you can, try to visit for the “Culture Shock” event in April, when multiple bands come and play. Go on Wikipedia and search for “Culture Shock” for more info.

Where are you from and what are you going to study? Good luck at Purchase.

Thank you very much! My parents will be selling my car then to help pay for out-of-state tuition. Do you know how often students usually go to NYC?

I’ve seen a few pictures of the campus and I’ll admit, it’s not gorgeous. But I completely agree, the way it looks won’t affect my education at all.

I would absolutely love to go to Culture Shock, such a cool campus event. They get some really great artists in.

I’m from Texas and have been accepted to the Theatre Design Technology program for Costume Design. I’m excited to be getting far away and starting something new!

My daughter is a recently admitted costume design student. We are in California. My daughter is still deciding between schools. We would love to chat wih you if you are open to that.

yeah absolutely!

There is major construction on the campus. The college at all is nice and has the feeling of a private college.

How often go studednts to NYC? As often as the like. Express train from White Plains is a 35 min ride :)
